Mental II review

Mental II returns to Nolimit City's asylum with a grid that looks small, rows of 3, 2, 3, 2 and 3 offering at least 108 ways, and a long list of tools for blowing it open. Fire Frames and Fire Reels split symbols, Enhancer Cells unlock as frames pile up, and xHole and xMental add rarer events on top. Two different scatter types combine to decide which of three bonus rounds you get, and the ceiling reaches 99,999x.

Fire Frames, Fire Reels and the cells

Wins pay as ways from left to right. On any spin, between one and 13 Fire Frames can appear, each splitting the symbol inside it in two, and between one and five whole Fire Reels can light up, splitting their symbols three ways. More splits mean more ways, which is how a narrow grid becomes a large one.

Fire Frames also unlock the Enhancer Cells at the bottom of reels 2, 3 and 4, at 4, 6 and 8 frames respectively, with a Fire Reel counting as two or three frames. A cell reveals a wild, an xSplit, an xNudge Wild, a Patient or an xWays symbol. The published hit frequency is 31.41%, close to one spin in three.

xNudge Wild

Always nudges until fully visible and adds 1 to its win multiplier for each step. Multipliers from several xNudge Wilds are added together, and splitting one with xSplit adds a further 1.

Dead Patients

Two Dead Patients reveal a Patient with a multiplier from 5x up to 9,999x that reflects the number of symbols on its reel. These multipliers are the main engine of the Surgery and ExperiMENTAL rounds.

The rare events: xHole, xMental and xGod

Three features sit above the regular modifiers and appear far less often.

xHole

Works only inside a Fire Frame or Fire Reel at the second position of reel 3. It scatters regular symbols and wilds across the grid at sizes of 2, 4 or 8, then turns into a wild itself.

xMental

Can land in any Fire Frame or Fire Reel. It grants an extra spin in which every position is a Fire Frame, the enhancers are forced to reveal, and an xHole may join in.

xGod

With one on each reel, or through the God Mode buy, the game can award its maximum win instantly.

Two scatters, three bonuses

Cognitive Scatters land on reels 1, 3 and 5; Disembodied Scatters land on reels 2 and 4. Three Cognitives start 8 Bloodletting Spins, where, according to the game page, Fire Frames and Fire Reels stay sticky. Adding a Disembodied Scatter upgrades the round to Surgery Spins, which collect the highest Patient multiplier and its symbol count. Two Disembodied Scatters with the three Cognitives lead to ExperiMENTAL Spins, where the count never goes down and the scatters stay sticky.

A Disembodied Scatter on its own triggers a Mental Transform, which our source names but does not explain. The rules' sheet puts the free spins rate at about 1 in 269 spins.

Boosters and the buy menu

The game has several paid boosters. xBet costs 1.4 times the stake and places a Cognitive Scatter on reel 1. The Fire Frames booster costs 6x and fills every position with frames. Boosters that activate xHole and xMental cost 99x and 3,200x.

Direct buys cover Bloodletting at 100x the bet, Surgery at 250x, Lucky Draw at 330x with a 50/40/10 split between tiers, ExperiMENTAL at 1,800x and God Mode at 6,666x. At a $1 stake, God Mode alone costs $6,666.

Four RTP settings and the odds

Our catalogue lists 96.06%, a house edge of 3.94% or about $39.40 per $1,000 wagered. The rules name three more settings: 95.23%, 94.04% and 92.02%. Check the info screen, because a lower version doubles the expected loss compared with the top one. At 96.06%, 100 spins cost on average $0.79 at $0.20, $3.94 at $1 and $19.70 at $5.

The base game provides 57.82% of the return and the bonuses 38.24%. A win of 100x or more comes about once in 993 spins. The catalogue says Very high volatility; the game page says Insane. The 99,999x cap, $19,999.80 at $0.20, is put at roughly 1 in 16 million spins. The original Mental lists 96.08% and 66,666x.

Pros

  • Fire Frames and Fire Reels can turn a 108-way grid into a much larger one
  • Three bonus tiers built from two scatter types
  • Patient multipliers from 5x to 9,999x
  • Detailed sheet figures: free spins 1 in 269, 100x wins 1 in 993

Cons

  • Four RTP versions, down to 92.02%
  • Very high volatility, labelled Insane on the game page
  • Many systems to learn and boosters costing up to 3,200x

Verdict

Mental II layers Fire Frames, Enhancer Cells, Patient multipliers and rare events like xHole and xMental onto a narrow grid, and its three bonuses escalate with the scatters you land. The catalogue RTP is 96.06%, but versions down to 92.02% exist, and the volatility is Very high, or Insane per the game page. The 99,999x cap is a 1 in 16 million event. Check the RTP and keep to a fixed budget.
