Misery Mining review

Misery Mining follows a bad-tempered dwarf hunting for the perfect beer recipe, and its board is literally a mine to be dug out. Play starts on a 3x3 patch in the middle of a 7x7 grid, walled in by barriers. Wins, collapses and above all xBomb explosions push those walls outwards. The bonus offers a choice between two modes, Mouse and Rat, and the top prize, Le Grande Jaune, is 70,000x the bet.

Digging out the grid

Every spin begins in the central 3x3 area. Wins are paid as groups of matching symbols, then removed in a collapse, with new symbols falling in; the rules summary in our pack does not print the exact group size needed. The published hit frequency is 28.57%, a little over one spin in four.

Barriers surround the active area. An xBomb that explodes next to a barrier moves it one step outwards, enlarging the playing field for the rest of the sequence. An xSize effect can also expand the active area. The bigger the open area, the more room for groups to form, so the mechanics feed each other.

xBomb Wild

Substitutes for every symbol except the Scatter and Super Scatter. It explodes the symbols around it, sparing scatters, and adds 1 to the multiplier for the next collapse. Bombs next to barriers push them back, opening more of the grid.

xBomb Mining

A safety net for dead spins. If a spin produces no win and no xBomb and fewer than three scatters land, the leftover scatters turn into non-wild xBombs that explode at once, raising the multiplier by 1 and moving nearby barriers outwards.

Misery Freespins: Mouse or Rat

Three Scatters, or one or two Super Scatters, trigger Misery Freespins. Depending on the trigger, the round starts with an open area of 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5, so a stronger trigger begins with more of the mine already dug.

Before the round you choose between Mouse mode and Rat mode. Our source describes Rat mode in more detail: it is a hold-style round that starts with three spins, and every coin wagon or Super Scatter that lands resets the count to three. A top row keeps delivering enhancers onto the board, including wagons, multipliers, bombs, Super Scatters, bags, chests and the rat and dwarf characters. Mouse mode is named but not explained in our pack, so check the in-game help before choosing.

The sheet quoted in the rules puts the free spins rate at about 1 in 220 spins, and it attributes 35.02% of the return to the bonus and 61.07% to the base game.

Bonus buy and RTP versions

Bonus buys are available, with prices ranging from 66x to 1,000x the bet according to the sheet. Individual prices are not printed in our source. At a $1 stake, the top option costs $1,000.

Our catalogue lists one RTP, 96.09%, but the rules sheet also names a 94.05% version. At 96.09% the house edge is 3.91%, about $39.10 per $1,000 wagered, and 100 spins cost on average $0.78 at $0.20, $3.91 at $1 and $19.55 at $5. A casino running the lower setting would keep noticeably more.

Volatility, ceiling and alternatives

Our catalogue rates Misery Mining High, one step below many of the studio's games, while the game page calls it Extreme. The sheet gives a win of 100x or more about once in 1,251 spins. The 70,000x cap equals $14,000 at a $0.20 stake and is estimated at roughly 1 in 60 million spins, so it is a theoretical ceiling rather than something to plan around.

Among similar High-rated games, The Border lists 96.17% with 44,288x, Das xBoot 96.03% with 55,200x, and Gluttony 96.09% with 32,000x.

Misery Mining fits players who like watching a board change shape and who are comfortable with long runs of small results. Because each spin starts from the cramped central area again, the early collapses decide how far a sequence can go, and many spins will end before the walls move at all.

Pros

  • Grid grows from 3x3 to 7x7 as bombs push barriers outwards
  • xBomb Mining turns dead spins into explosions
  • Free spins can start with a larger 4x4 or 5x5 area
  • Detailed sheet figures: free spins 1 in 220, 100x wins 1 in 1,251

Cons

  • A 94.05% RTP version exists alongside 96.09%
  • Mouse mode is not explained in our source
  • Volatility is High in our data and Extreme on the game page

Verdict

Misery Mining makes expansion the point: a 3x3 core grows into a 7x7 mine as xBombs blow the barriers back, and even dead spins can turn into explosions. The bonus offers a Mouse or Rat mode choice and can start with a bigger area. The RTP is 96.09%, with a 94.05% version on record, and volatility is High, or Extreme by the game page. Treat the 70,000x cap as theory and set a budget.
