Mental review

Set in a sepia-toned psychiatric institution and featuring five patients, Mental takes on a grim subject, and Nolimit City makes no effort to soften it. The mechanics are just as dense: split symbols that add ways, multipliers that can reach x9999, and three tiers of free spins unlocked by combinations of scorpions and spiders. Very high volatility and a 66,666x ceiling complete a game built for extreme outcomes.

An unusual grid

The five reels have different heights: three, two, three, two and three positions. Multiplied out, that gives 108 ways to win, paid from left to right. Matching symbols need to sit on adjacent reels starting from the first, in any row.

The layout rarely stays at 108 ways for long. Several features split symbols in two or add extra ways, so the number of winning routes on a given spin can be well above the starting figure. The studio publishes a hit frequency of 34.19%, meaning roughly one spin in three returns some kind of win, although many of those will be small.

Base-game features

Four mechanics run in the base game, and most of them also matter in the bonus rounds.

Fire Frames

Triggered at random on a spin. Between 1 and 13 random positions are marked, and a symbol landing in a frame is split into two parts. Each split adds to the number of ways on that reel, so a spin with many frames can pay far more combinations than the base layout allows.

Enhancer Cells

When 4 or 6 Fire Frames appear, enhancer boosts come into play. The official sheet names xWays, xNudge and xSplit among them, along with other boosters, without listing every option. Each one is a further way of growing the grid or the value of what lands on it.

Dead Patient

Landing two Dead Patient symbols can award a random multiplier from x5 to x9999, placed on a patient symbol. This is the source of the game's largest multipliers, and a span that wide goes a long way to explaining the Very high volatility rating.

Mental Transform

Whenever a Spider symbol lands, it transforms symbols on the reels. The sheet does not detail the transformation itself, but the Spider's role grows in the bonus tiers, where it can become sticky and trigger the effect on every spin.

Autopsy, Lobotomy and Mental

Scorpion symbols are the scatters, and Spiders decide which of the three bonus tiers you reach. The sheet does not state how many spins each tier awards, so we leave that out.

Three Scorpions start Autopsy Freespins, where the Fire Frames are sticky for the whole round. This mode can later be upgraded to one of the higher tiers.

Three Scorpions plus one Spider start Lobotomy Freespins. The Spider becomes sticky and triggers Mental Transform on every spin, and the Dead Multiplier is transferred to a Patient symbol, which is how large wins are built. Lobotomy can in turn be upgraded to the top tier.

Three Scorpions plus two Spiders start Mental Freespins. Both Spiders are sticky, and here the Dead Multiplier never decreases, so a high value, once reached, stays in place for the rest of the round. Any bonus ends early if total wins reach the 66,666x cap, which the studio labels This is mental!!!

Buying a bonus

The Nolimit Bonus lets you buy straight into the free spins tiers for between 80x and 1,000x the base bet. The sheet does not itemise each price, and notes that the option may be removed in some regulated markets. A purchase at those prices can easily return less than it cost.

The maths of the madness

Our catalogue lists one RTP, 96.08%, which leaves a house edge of 3.92%, about $39.20 per $1,000 wagered. The official sheet also mentions a second setting of 94.20%, so the version in play matters. On the main figure, 100 spins cost on average $0.78 at $0.20, $3.92 at $1 and $19.60 at $5.

According to the sheet, 58.16% of the return comes from the base game and 37.93% from the free spins. Free spins arrive about once every 216 spins on average, and a win of 100x or more about once every 831 spins. The 66,666x cap is far rarer, estimated at around 1 in 18 million spins. In money it would be $13,333.20 at $0.20 or $66,666 at $1.

Sequel, peers and who it is for

Mental II lists a 96.06% RTP and raises the ceiling to 99,999x, also with Very high volatility. Similar studio games include Folsom Prison at 96.07% and 75,000x, Serial at 96.07% and 74,800x, and Fire in the Hole 3 at 96.05% and 70,000x.

This is a game for experienced players who understand very high volatility and can afford long losing runs. The theme will not suit everyone, and the rules take time to learn. No free demo is listed in our data, so read the official rules carefully before playing.

Pros

  • Dead Patient multipliers range from x5 to x9999
  • Three free spins tiers with clear upgrade paths
  • 66,666x max win
  • Published hit frequency and bonus odds

Cons

  • Very high volatility with a max win estimated at 1 in 18 million spins
  • A second 94.20% RTP setting exists
  • Dark subject matter and complex rules
  • No free demo in our data

Verdict

Mental is a dense, very high volatility game: 108 ways that grow with Fire Frames, Dead Patient multipliers up to x9999 and three bonus tiers that reward Spiders with sticky effects. The RTP is 96.08% with a 3.92% house edge, and a 94.20% setting also exists. The 66,666x cap is a remote outcome. Approach it with a strict budget, if at all.
