Folsom Prison review

Folsom Prison starts small on purpose. Nolimit City's jailhouse slot opens with most of its cells locked and only 16 ways to win, and the whole game is about breaking positions open. Cockroach nests crawl through locked cells, pairs of scatters turn into modifiers, and xWays and xSplit symbols multiply the routes to a payout. Two escape-themed bonus rounds, Walk The Line and The Chair, sit on top, with a 75,000x cap at the very end.

Locked cells and the starting grid

Five reels pay as ways from left to right, but many positions begin locked. With only two open rows per reel, the game starts at 16 ways, a deliberately tight frame. The game page describes a full layout of 4-6-6-6-4 rows once everything is open, while the rules summary in our pack speaks of reels of two to four rows; the in-game help is the place to confirm the exact maximum.

The middle two rows matter most. In the base game, scatters land only there, on reels 2 to 5, and xSplit symbols act on those rows too. The wild can land on any reel except the first and replaces paying symbols. The published hit frequency is 22.62%, a little under one spin in four.

How cells get opened

Several modifiers exist mainly to unlock space or add ways. Their effects stack, so a spin with more than one of them can grow quickly.

Cockroach Nest

A special symbol that opens locked cells on the middle three reels. The game page describes the roaches spreading across the board to unlock closed positions, which adds ways for that spin.

Two-scatter conversion

Two scatters unlock the middle two rows on reel 5. When they do not start a bonus, they can also convert into an xWays symbol, an xSplit, a wild or a Cockroach Nest, so a near miss on the bonus still changes the spin.

xWays and xSplit

An xWays symbol can land anywhere and reveals a paying symbol while adding extra ways. xSplit, on the central two rows of reels 2 to 5, splits what it touches and doubles the ways running through it.

Walk The Line and The Chair

Three scatters start Walk The Line with at least 8 spins, and four start The Chair, the heavier tier, also with at least 8. Any scatter split by an xSplit on the triggering spin adds one more spin. During Walk The Line, scatters appear on reel 5.

The game page says the grid keeps opening during the bonus, which is where the expanding layout pays off; the detailed differences between the two rounds are not spelled out in our source. According to the sheet quoted in the rules, free spins trigger about once in 195 spins, and the base game supplies 60.84% of the return.

Toast Bet and buying in

Toast Bet adds 20% to the stake, so each spin costs 1.2 times the base bet, and in exchange a scatter is placed on reel 2. That raises the chance of a bonus without changing the listed RTP. Because every spin is a fifth more expensive, the average cost of a session grows by the same fifth.

The Nolimit Bonus Buy offers Walk The Line and The Chair variants at prices between 68x and 1,500x the bet. The exact price per option is not printed in our source. At a $1 stake the top end is $1,500 for one round.

The numbers behind the bars

One RTP is on record, 96.07%, leaving a house edge of 3.93%, about $39.30 per $1,000 wagered. A hundred spins cost on average $0.79 at $0.20, $3.93 at $1 and $19.65 at $5.

Our catalogue labels the volatility Very high; the game page goes further and calls it Insane. The sheet gives a win of 100x or more about once in 860 spins. The Meet Your Maker cap is 75,000x the bet: $15,000 at $0.20 and $75,000 at $1. For comparison, Serial lists 96.07% with 74,800x, and Brute Force: Alien Onslaught 96.01% with 80,000x, both rated Very high.

Pros

  • Distinctive locked-cell grid that grows from 16 ways
  • Two-scatter near misses convert into useful modifiers
  • Toast Bet adds a reel 2 scatter for only 20% more
  • Published rates: free spins about 1 in 195, 100x wins about 1 in 860

Cons

  • Very high volatility, called Insane on the game page
  • Bonus buys reach 1,500x the bet
  • Sources disagree on the maximum grid size

Verdict

Folsom Prison turns a cramped 16-way start into a game about unlocking space, with roaches, scatter conversions, xWays and xSplit all working to open the grid. The RTP is 96.07% and the volatility is Very high, or Insane by the game page's label. Free spins arrive about once in 195 spins and the 75,000x cap is extremely rare. With a 3.93% house edge, play it only with a budget you accept losing.
