Wisdom of Athena 1000 review
Wisdom of Athena 1000 is Pragmatic Play's 2024 reworking of its Athena slot, set on the summit of Mount Olympus. The goddess presides over a pay-anywhere grid with an extra row locked across the top, which opens one position at a time as tumbles keep going. Multiplier symbols reach 1000x, and in the free spins they build into a running total that lasts the whole round. The ceiling is 10,000x the bet.
A grid that grows from the top
The official rules describe a basic 6x5 grid with a locked row of symbols above it, which is why the studio's own page speaks of a 6×6 playing area. Symbols pay anywhere on the screen. The rules and the catalogue record 8 as the minimum count for a win, while the studio's marketing text mentions four or more, so the in-game paytable is the place to confirm the exact threshold.
Each win clears the winning symbols, lets the rest fall and fills the gaps from above. Tumbles continue without limit as long as new wins form, and the total is credited once the chain is over. During those subsequent tumbles, positions in the locked row open one by one from left to right. The studio says 15 tumbles are needed to clear the entire row, so a fully open grid is the product of a long sequence, not a routine event.
Scatters sit on all reels, pay in any position in the base game and do not disappear during tumbles; they stay until every tumble from that spin is finished.
Multipliers and the free spins
Multiplier symbols are what the 1000 in the name refers to. They can land on any reel, during spins and tumbles alike, in both the base game and the bonus. How they are applied depends on where they land, and that difference shapes the whole game.
Multiplier symbols
Each one takes a random value between 2x and 1000x, from a fixed list of steps such as 5x, 50x, 200x and 500x. In the base game, all multipliers visible when a tumbling sequence ends are added together and the total win of that sequence is multiplied by the sum.
Free Spins
Four or more scatters anywhere award 10 free spins. The locked row starts fully closed, every tumble counts towards opening it, and opened positions stay open until the round ends. Each multiplier that lands is added to a total multiplier that applies to every win for the rest of the round. Three or more scatters during the bonus add 5 free spins.
Tumble Feature
After every paid spin the winning symbols vanish, the remaining ones drop, and new symbols fill the empty positions. There is no limit to the number of tumbles. In this game the tumbles also drive the top-row unlocks, so a long chain improves the grid as well as paying more.
Paying for a different route
Two optional settings change the price of a spin. They are mutually exclusive: with the higher bet multiplier active, the purchase option is switched off.
Ante Bet
The bet multiplier can be set to 25x instead of the normal 20x, which makes each spin cost 1.25 times as much. In exchange, more scatter symbols are placed on the reels and the free spins become more likely to start naturally.
Buy Free Spins
The bonus can be bought from the base game for 100x the current total bet. On the triggering spin, 4, 5 or 6 scatters land at random. Buying skips the wait but does not change the underlying odds of what the round pays.
