Gates of Olympus review
Multipliers are the whole story here. Pragmatic Play built Gates of Olympus in 2021 around a pay-anywhere grid where orbs worth anything from 2x to 500x can drop in during normal spins, not only in the bonus. In the free spins those values stop resetting and build into a running total. Add a choice between an ante bet and a bonus purchase, and the game gives you more than one way to shape a session.
Pay anywhere, then tumble
Paylines play no part. A result counts when 8 or more identical symbols are on screen at once, wherever they sit. Once paid, those symbols are removed, everything above them slides down, and fresh symbols fill the gaps from the top.
That refill can create a new winning group, which pays and clears in turn. The official rules set no limit on how many times this can repeat, and the money from a whole chain is credited only after the last tumble of the base spin. A single stake can therefore produce several separate wins before the screen settles.
The multiplier orbs
Multiplier symbols sit on every reel and can appear during any spin or tumble, in the base game as well as the bonus. Each one takes a random value from a fixed ladder: 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x or 500x.
Timing matters. Orbs do not pay by themselves. When the tumbling sequence finishes, every multiplier still on screen is summed, and that sum is applied to the total won during the sequence. An orb that lands on a spin with no win simply has nothing to multiply. The rules list the possible values but not how often each one appears, so there is no basis for counting on the 250x or 500x steps.
Free spins with a total that keeps growing
Four or more scatters anywhere start the round with 15 free spins. The key change is memory. Whenever a multiplier symbol lands on a spin that also produces a win, its value joins a total multiplier, and that total applies to every later win involving a new multiplier for the rest of the round.
Three or more scatters during the feature add 5 more spins, and special reels are used while it runs. The longer the round lasts, the larger the running total can become, which is why most of the upside is concentrated here rather than in the base game.
Tumble Feature
After each paid win the winning symbols vanish, survivors drop down and new ones fall in. The chain repeats until no fresh group forms, with no cap on the number of tumbles. Wins from the whole chain are added to the balance at the end.
Free Spins
Triggered by four or more scatters and opening with 15 spins. Multipliers that land on winning spins are added to a total that persists for the round. Three or more scatters inside the feature award 5 extra spins.
Ante Bet
Raising the bet multiplier from 20x to 25x, so each spin costs 1.25 times the base stake, doubles the natural chance of triggering free spins by placing more scatters on the reels. While it is active, the purchase option is switched off.
Buy Free Spins
At the standard 20x setting, the bonus can be started straight from the base game for 100x the current total bet. It is unavailable whenever the ante bet is turned on, so the two options cannot be combined.
Return, cost and the 5,000x ceiling
The catalogue records one RTP for this title, 96.5%, which equals a house edge of 3.5%. Put another way, $35 of every $1,000 staked is retained on average across a very long sample. The rules document in the fact pack also quotes a theoretical 94.5%, so it is worth opening the game's info screen to see which version a given site runs.
Wins stop at 5,000x the bet. That is $1,000 on a $0.20 spin, $5,000 on a $1 spin and $25,000 on a $5 spin. No volatility label is published in our data, but with every big result depending on stacked multipliers, the swings are easy to predict in shape if not in timing.
For a sense of session cost: 100 spins at $1 send $100 through the reels and keep $3.50 of it on average; at $5 a spin the average cost of 100 spins rises to $17.50.
Related games by the numbers
Four later releases carry the name. Gates of Olympus 1000 (2023) keeps 96.5% and lifts the cap to 15,000x. Gates of Olympus Xmas 1000 followed in 2024 at 96.5%, while Gates of Olympus 2500 and Gates of Olympus POP both arrived in 2026, listed at 96.51% and 96.54%.
Outside the franchise, Starlight Princess from the same year matches the 96.5% RTP and 5,000x ceiling exactly, and Aztec Smash from 2024 lists 96.52% with a 9,000x maximum.
Pros
- Multiplier orbs from 2x to 500x can land in the base game as well as the bonus
- In free spins, multipliers build a running total that lasts the whole round
- Choice between a 25x ante bet and a 100x bonus purchase
- Free official demo available
Cons
- A hard cap of 5,000x the bet on any win
- Most of the value depends on rare high multipliers in the bonus
- The pack also lists a lower 94.5% figure, so the RTP in use needs checking
Verdict
Gates of Olympus is a multiplier machine with simple rules: 8 or more matching symbols pay, tumbles chain the wins, and the free spins keep a total that only goes up. The RTP is 96.5%, and no volatility rating is published, though the design clearly favours swings. Check the RTP shown in the game, try the demo first and keep the 3.5% house edge in mind.
