Wisdom of Athena review
Greek gods supply the theme, but the mechanic that defines Wisdom of Athena is an outer multiplier that only ever grows during free spins. Pragmatic Play released the game in 2023 on a 5x6 pay-anywhere grid where tumbles also work toward revealing an extra reel. Both kinds of progress, the multiplier and the reel, carry through the bonus, which is where the game keeps most of its potential.
Pay anywhere, then tumble
A win needs at least eight matching symbols anywhere on the reels. There are no lines or ways to track: the count of a symbol on screen is what matters. Winning symbols are removed, new ones fall from the top, and the board can pay again in the same spin.
Each tumble also helps reveal an extra reel. Pragmatic Play does not state how many tumbles the unlock takes, only that the progress counts toward it. Opening the reel adds space for symbols, which feeds back into the chance of further tumbles.
Multipliers in both modes
Multiplier symbols appear in the base game as well as in the free spins. In the base game, any multipliers on the screen are added together, and that total applies to the spin. Accumulation is reserved for the free game, so a base-game multiplier only works on the spin where it lands.
The difference in the bonus is accumulation, described below. That single rule change is what separates an ordinary bonus round from a strong one.
Free Spins
Four or more scatters in the base game award 10 free spins, and the scatters pay on the trigger. During the round, three or more scatters add 5 extra spins. At the end of every free spin, including its tumbles, the multipliers on the screen are added to an Outer Multiplier. It rises with each landed multiplier, even on spins without a win.
Scatter
The scatter can land on any reel in both the base game and the free spins. It pays when it triggers the free game, so the spin that opens the bonus also returns something on its own. In the round itself it acts as the retrigger, with three or more adding five spins.
What the accumulation means
Because the Outer Multiplier only goes up, the order of events matters. Multipliers that land early in the round boost every later win, while a large multiplier on the last spin affects little. A retrigger extends the period over which a high Outer Multiplier can work, so 5 extra spins late in a strong round are worth more than they look.
The studio also says progress toward the unlocked reel is kept through all later free spins, so the bonus can play on a bigger board than the spin that triggered it.
For budgeting, this design asks for patience. The base game can pay through tumbles and its own multipliers, but the accumulating Outer Multiplier exists only in the bonus, and four scatters are needed to get there. Players who want steady returns spin to spin may find that frustrating; those who accept long waits for one decisive round will understand the trade.
The cost side
Wisdom of Athena runs at a single 96.07% RTP, a 3.93% house edge, or about $39.30 per $1,000 wagered on average. At $1 a spin, 100 spins cost about $3.93; at $5 they cost about $19.65; at $0.20 about $0.79.
Neither a volatility rating nor a max win is published in our data, though the design, with most potential inside an accumulating bonus, points to uneven results.
Later versions and alternatives
Wisdom of Athena 1000 (2024) lists a 96% RTP with a 10,000x ceiling, and Wisdom of Athena 1000 Xmas (2025) also lists 96%. Several 2023 Pragmatic Play games share the 96.07% figure, among them Fat Panda with a 20,000x cap and Fire Archer with 4,000x.
Pros
- Outer Multiplier in the free spins grows and never resets during the round
- Tumbles also work toward an extra reel
- Retriggers add 5 spins at a time
- Free official demo available
Cons
- No volatility rating or max win published
- Base-game multipliers do not carry over between spins
Verdict
Wisdom of Athena builds its appeal on accumulation: tumbles push toward an extra reel, and in the free spins every landed multiplier feeds an Outer Multiplier that keeps rising. That makes the bonus the clear centre of the game. On the other side, the 96.07% RTP means a 3.93% house edge, and neither volatility nor max win is published. The free demo is the right place to learn it.
