Sword of Ares review
Sword of Ares sends the Greek god of war and his troops onto a six-by-five board. The format will be familiar from other Pragmatic Play releases: symbols pay anywhere, wins tumble away and the multiplier tools do the heavy lifting. What sets it apart is a set of four bomb types that blast whole rows, columns or diagonals off the board, which gives the tumbles more ways to keep going.
Pay anywhere on a 6x5 screen
The screen is six reels wide and five rows tall, with 11 symbols in play. Nine are ordinary paying symbols, one is the scatter and one is the bomb. Position does not matter: the game counts how many copies of a symbol are on the screen at the end of the spin, and that count sets the value of the win.
After each win the tumble feature takes over. The winning symbols leave the board and new ones drop in. The studio says this repeats until no further wins occur, so one paid spin can contain a whole chain of results.
Four kinds of bomb
Bombs are the unusual part of the rules. Each one explodes symbols around it when it lands, and the scatter symbol is always spared. Clearing symbols opens space on the board, which creates fresh landing spots for the next drop.
Horizontal Explosion Bomb
Blows up the whole row it sits in. Every symbol on that row is removed except a scatter.
Vertical Explosion Bomb
Does the same for the whole reel it lands on, again leaving any scatter untouched.
HV Explosion Bomb
Combines both effects and clears the row and the reel it is on at once, apart from scatters.
Crossfire Explosion Bomb
Fires along the four diagonal directions, north-west, north-east, south-east and south-west, rather than along the row and column.
Multiplier collection and free spins
The studio describes a Multiplier Collection with three or six levels, worth up to 15x in the base game. Bomb symbols can be present while it runs, which the studio presents as extra win potential.
In the free spins, multipliers of up to 500x can be unlocked, and this is where the 10,000x ceiling comes from. The official text we hold does not list how many scatters start the round or how many spins it awards, so we do not state them here. The sensible reading is that most of the potential sits in the bonus, with the base game mainly feeding the collection.
The numbers
Sword of Ares was released in 2022 with a single RTP of 96.4%, a house edge of 3.6%. That means about $36 lost per $1,000 wagered over a long run. Our catalogue does not publish a volatility label for it, and the studio text does not name one either.
A 100-spin session costs $0.72 on average at a $0.20 bet, $3.60 at $1 and $18 at $5, or $500 wagered. The max win is 10,000x the bet, which is $2,000 at $0.20, $10,000 at $1 and $50,000 at $5. Those are the top of the range, not what a session normally returns.
Where it sits among similar games
Several games with the same 10,000x cap sit close on RTP. Candy Blitz and Candy Jar Clusters, both from 2023, list 96.08%, and Cyclops Smash lists 96.06%. Aztec Smash from 2024 reaches 96.52% with a 9,000x cap. Gates of Olympus 1000 and Starlight Princess 1000, both from 2023, list 96.5% and a 15,000x cap, so they offer a higher ceiling at a slightly better return.
Pros
- Pays-anywhere wins with repeatable tumbles
- Four bomb types add row, column and diagonal clears
- Free-spin multipliers of up to 500x
- 96.4% RTP is above several similar games, with a free official demo
Cons
- No volatility label is published, so the swing size is unclear
- Free-spin trigger details are not in the official text we hold
- Max win of 10,000x is lower than the 15,000x of some similar titles
Verdict
Sword of Ares is a clear pays-anywhere tumble slot whose bombs and multiplier collection give each spin a chance to extend. The 96.4% RTP and 3.6% house edge sit slightly above Candy Blitz and Cyclops Smash, while the 10,000x ceiling and the 500x free-spin multipliers show where the potential sits. Because no volatility is published, try the free demo first and set a budget as for any paid entertainment.
