Tombstone R.I.P review
Tombstone R.I.P is a Wild West revenge story from Nolimit City and one of the most extreme maths models in our catalogue. Its reels are 2, 3, 3, 3 and 1 rows tall, which gives 108 ways when the final reel's double-height split wild is counted. Only 9.08% of spins pay anything, partly because the xRIP rule wipes out wins smaller than the stake. At the far end sits El Gordo's Revenge, a 300,000x cap.
A small grid with a harsh rule
Wins are counted as ways from left to right. Reel 1 has two rows, reels 2 to 4 have three, and the last reel shows a single position. The xSplit Wild on that last reel counts as two symbols high, which is how the official sheet arrives at 108 ways.
xRIP is the rule that shapes the base game. Whenever the total win of a spin is below the base stake, the payout is set to zero. Small wins that would normally soften losing streaks simply do not exist here. Combined with the narrow grid, that is why the published hit frequency is just 9.08%, roughly one paying spin in eleven.
The two wilds
Both wild types add power to a ways win, and in the free spins their multipliers feed a round-long multiplier.
xNudge Wild
A stacked wild that always nudges until it is fully on screen. Each step of the nudge increases its multiplier, so a wild that starts mostly hidden ends up worth more than one that lands in full view.
xSplit Wild
Lands only on the last reel and occupies two symbol heights. It cuts the symbols to its left in half, doubling them and adding ways, which can multiply the number of combinations in a single spin.
Hang 'Em High and Boothill
Three Hang 'Em High Scatters award 8 Hang 'Em High Freespins. In this round, multipliers from the wilds raise a bonus win multiplier that stays in place for the entire round, so every wild that lands makes later wins larger.
Three Hang 'Em High Scatters together with a Boothill Scatter award 10 Boothill Freespins instead. Here only Cowboy symbols land on the last reel, and matching Cowboys elsewhere on the grid turn into wilds. On every spin, one random Cowboy also receives a multiplier between 5x and 999x. That combination is where the game's most extreme results come from.
According to the rules' sheet, free spins arrive about once every 194 spins, and they account for 40.08% of the return against 55.99% from the base game.
Enhanced Bet, buys and RTP versions
Enhanced Bet costs 10% extra, 1.1 times the stake, and places a scatter on the spin. Unusually, it also changes the return: with it on, the RTP rises to 96.28%, or 94.25% on the lower setting. Without it, the game runs at 96.08%, or 94.08% on the lower setting. Check which version you are offered, since the gap is two full percentage points.
Nolimit Bonus buys range from 70x to 3,000x the bet depending on the bonus. Individual prices are not given, and the rules note the feature may be removed in some regulated markets. At a $1 stake, the top of that range is $3,000 for a single bonus, a sum that deserves the same caution as any other spend on the game.
What 300,000x really means
At the catalogue figure of 96.08%, the house edge is 3.92%, or about $39.20 per $1,000 wagered. A hundred spins cost $0.78 at $0.20, $3.92 at $1 and $19.60 at $5 on average, though with a 9.08% hit rate the spread around those averages is enormous.
Our catalogue rates the volatility Very high; the game page calls it Insane. A 100x win comes about once in 1,014 spins. El Gordo's Revenge, 300,000x the bet, is $60,000 at a $0.20 stake, and the sheet estimates it at roughly 1 in 130 million rounds. The original Tombstone lists 96.19%, High volatility and 11,456x, while Tombstone Slaughter: El Gordo's Revenge pushes to 500,000x at 96%.
Pros
- Boothill Freespins pair wild-making Cowboys with 5x to 999x multipliers
- Wild multipliers persist for the whole Hang 'Em High round
- Enhanced Bet raises the RTP to 96.28% for 10% more stake
- Very detailed official sheet figures
Cons
- Only 9.08% of spins pay, and xRIP removes wins below the stake
- Lower RTP versions of 94.08% and 94.25% exist
- Very high volatility, called Insane on the game page
Verdict
Tombstone R.I.P is built for extremes: a 108-way grid, a 9.08% hit rate, xRIP removing small wins, and free spins where Cowboys can carry 999x multipliers. The catalogue RTP is 96.08%, or 96.28% with Enhanced Bet, but lower versions exist, and the volatility is Very high, or Insane per the game page. The 300,000x cap is a 1 in 130 million event. Play it only with money set aside for entertainment.
