Tsar Wars review

Tsar Wars is a science-fiction parody in which a band of rebels takes on a ruler who has the galaxy in his grip. The play is built around one gauge. Every winning symbol fills a Destruction meter beside the six-by-six board, and when it hits 25 the game hands out a feature-packed spin that can lead to the real bonus rounds. It carries a Medium volatility label, which makes the maths worth reading closely.

Clusters, avalanches and big symbols

Wins come from clusters of five or more matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically on a 6x6 board. A paying cluster is destroyed, new symbols avalanche down, and the win multiplier goes up by one for each winning avalanche. So the base game is about chaining wins, as each link pays more than the last.

Some symbols arrive in large form. They can be 1x1, 2x2 or 3x3, which covers one, four or nine positions. When a large symbol leaves gaps beneath it, the space is filled with that same symbol, so a single big drop can create a cluster by itself.

The modifiers

Three modifiers can fire in the base game, and the Destruction Spin switches all of them on together. A Trapped Wild is a symbol highlighted on the board. It turns into a Wild when it takes part in a win or is removed by an xBomb, and it stays sticky until the next avalanche.

Wild Rush

Turns between two and five symbols on the board into Wilds. The result is a denser board with more chances of a cluster forming.

Force Shift

Transforms symbols so they match, up to three transformations that can create or enlarge paying clusters.

xBomb Wild

Between one and three symbols become xBombs. Each one explodes and removes the neighbouring symbols, except Wilds and the Tsar Side Bonus, and adds 1 to the next multiplier.

Destruction meter and the bonus ladder

Collecting 25 winning symbols fills the meter. Once there are no more wins, a single Destruction Spin starts with every modifier firing at least once. The meter resets at the start of each spin.

If the meter fills again during that spin, the game moves up a level. You pick one of the three modifiers for the Revolution Spins and receive five, six or seven spins depending on the choice. The picked modifier fires on every spin at least once, and the multiplier starts at 15x. If a Tsar Side Bonus symbol lands in the same moment, you get six Tsar Side Spins, in which all three modifiers are active and the multiplier also starts at 15x.

In both rounds, a meter that reaches 30 adds two spins and doubles the multiplier. Rounds end when the spins are used or 19,775x is reached, a limit the game calls Bombs Away.

Paying for xBoost

The xBoost options are bought before the spin and come in four levels. At 5x the bet one modifier is active, at 12x two are, and at 30x the bet you go directly to a Destruction Spin. The 60x option places at least one Trapped Wild as a 2x2 or 3x3 symbol. Each step costs more per spin, so the stake is used faster.

Numbers and neighbours

Tsar Wars has one RTP on record, 96.05%, a house edge of 3.95%. That works out to about $39.50 lost per $1,000 wagered. Hit frequency is 21.2% and volatility is Medium.

For 100 spins the average cost is $0.79 at $0.20, $3.95 at $1 and $19.75 at $5, or $500 wagered. The max win of 19,775x is worth $3,955 at $0.20, $19,775 at $1 and $98,875 at $5. Similar Medium games include DJ Psycho at 96.05% with a 25,420x cap, The Cage at 96.05% and 25,000x, and Space Donkey at 96.07% with 14,649x.

Pros

  • Medium volatility with a 21.2% hit frequency
  • Avalanche multipliers rise with every winning drop
  • Three modifiers, with the Destruction Spin firing all of them
  • Max win of 19,775x the bet

Cons

  • The bonus ladder needs the meter to fill twice, so the top rounds are rare by design
  • Many modifier rules for a cluster game
  • No official free demo is listed in our catalogue

Verdict

Tsar Wars suits players who like a game that explains its own progress. The meter, avalanche multipliers and tiered rounds are easy to follow on screen, even if the rules take a few minutes to read. The 96.05% RTP, a 3.95% house edge, and the Medium volatility are moderate, but the 19,775x ceiling still rests on the rare Revolution and Tsar Side rounds.
