Ugliest Catch review

Ugliest Catch takes the fishing slot somewhere unpleasant on purpose: a polluted lake full of mutated fish, a troll and a fisherman with a couple of beers in him. Nolimit City builds it on a 5x5 grid whose top and bottom rows start locked. Scatters break those locks open, a Fisherman Wild collects the values of fish symbols, and three free spin rounds differ mainly in how much of the board is open from the start.

A board that starts half closed

Each reel has an Enhancer Cell at the top and one at the bottom. In the base game these positions are locked, so wins are counted only across the open middle of the screen. The studio page describes this as a three-by-five layout with 243 ways that can grow to five by five. Ways pay from left to right, and only open positions count.

A Scatter does more than count towards the bonus. When one lands, it unlocks the closed positions on its own reel. Whatever sits behind them is revealed: an ordinary symbol, an xWays symbol that splits into 2 to 4 copies of the same symbol and adds ways, or a Big Berta carrying a value. xWays can only appear on these locked or enhancer positions, which means the extra ways are tied to Scatters opening cells.

The lever that matters most is the fisherman. A golden Fisherman Wild that lands in an opened enhancer cell in the base game starts the collection feature, and in the free spins any Fisherman Wild on an open position does the same.

Features named on the rules sheet

The collection mechanic carries most of the value, while the other entries change the price or the ceiling of a spin.

Kill N' Grill Wild Fishing

Triggered by the Fisherman Wild. Every Fish Trophy and Big Berta on screen is collected and their values are paid as multiples of the bet. Fish Trophies range from 2x to 5,000x and Big Berta from 100x to 5,000x. In the free spins the collected total is also multiplied by the current Troll Level.

Boosted xBet

An optional mode that raises the stake by 75%, making each spin cost 1.75 times the base bet. In exchange a Scatter is placed on reel 2 of every base spin, so at least one reel always has its locked cells opened. It does not apply inside the bonus rounds.

Nolimit Bonus Buy

Four purchases are listed: 8 Lunker Spins for 94x the bet, 9 Hawg Spins for 300x, 10 Honey Hole Spins for 866x, and a Lucky Draw for 390x that hands out a random bonus. The rules note a stake limit of €100 for buying, and the pack flags that the studio's CMS text mentions a price band that does not match these itemised prices.

Kiss My GO-TO-HELL

The game's name for its win cap. Once total winnings in a round reach 50,000x the bet, play stops there and the round ends, including in the middle of a free spins session.

Three depths of free spins

The number of Scatters decides which round you get. Three award 8 Lunker Spins with 6 enhancer cells opened, four award 9 Hawg Spins with 8 cells opened, and five award 10 Honey Hole Spins with all 10 cells opened. More open cells means more room for xWays, Big Berta and Fisherman Wilds from the first spin of the round.

In Lunker and Hawg Spins an extra Scatter opens 2 more enhancer cells and adds 1 spin. Across all three rounds the Troll Level climbs as Fisherman Wilds are collected: every fourth Wild raises the level and adds 2 spins. The levels run 2x, 3x and 10x, and they multiply every Fish Trophy value the fisherman collects. That makes the jump to the 10x level the point where a round can turn large, and the bigger rounds give more spins to get there.

Price, swing and the cap in figures

One RTP is on record: 96.11%, a house edge of 3.89%. Across a very long run that comes to about $38.90 retained per $1,000 staked. Hit frequency is listed at 22.99%, so roughly one spin in four and a bit pays something, and many of those hits will be small.

Our catalogue rates the volatility Very high; the studio page calls it Extreme. Both labels point the same way: long dry stretches are normal and the return depends heavily on rare bonus outcomes. For short sessions, 100 spins at $0.20 cost $0.78 on average and 100 spins at $5 cost $19.45, although real results land far from those averages.

The 50,000x ceiling equals $10,000 at a $0.20 stake, $50,000 at $1 and $250,000 at $5. It is the cap of the design, not something a session should be measured against. Note that Boosted xBet raises the cost of each spin, so the average loss per spin rises with it.

Games with comparable numbers

No sequels are listed. Among titles with close figures, Bounty Hunters sits at 96.07% with a 52,310x max win, Disturbed at 96.1% with 54,391x, and D - Day at 96.12% with 55,555x. All three carry the same Very high label, so the differences between them come down to features rather than headline maths.

Pros

  • Scatters open locked reel cells, so even base spins can change shape
  • Troll Level multipliers of 2x, 3x and 10x apply to every collected fish value
  • Three bonus rounds with 8, 9 or 10 spins and 6, 8 or 10 open cells
  • A 50,000x win cap backed by a 22.99% hit frequency figure

Cons

  • Very high volatility (Extreme on the studio page) means long quiet runs
  • Bonus Buy prices reach 866x the bet for the top round
  • No free demo is flagged in our data

Verdict

Ugliest Catch rewards patience with a layered design: Scatters unlock cells, the fisherman collects fish values, and the Troll Level multiplies them in the bonus. The 96.11% RTP leaves a 3.89% house edge, and the volatility is Very high in our catalogue and Extreme by the studio's own rating. It suits players who accept long gaps for the chance of a big collection, and who set a firm budget before the first cast.
