Starlight Princess 1000 review

Pragmatic Play released Starlight Princess 1000 in 2023 as a follow-up to Starlight Princess. It keeps the pay-anywhere tumbling format, offers multiplier values up to 1000x and lifts the maximum win to 15,000x the bet, up from the original's 5,000x. Wins need no paylines, symbols fall into place after each payout, and the multipliers on screen are added up at the end of every sequence. The princess herself also doubles as a scatter.

Pay anywhere, then tumble

Eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the screen make a win, so position and direction do not matter. After a win is paid, the winning symbols disappear, the remaining ones fall to the bottom and new symbols arrive from above to fill the gaps.

This tumbling continues for as long as new wins appear, and the rules state that there is no limit to the number of tumbles. All wins from a base spin are added to the balance only after the last tumble has been played, which is why a single spin can resolve in several steps.

The multiplier symbol

Multiplier symbols can land on any reel, during spins and tumbles, in the base game and in free spins. Each one takes a random value from 2x to 1000x. The list of possible values is 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, 500x or 1000x.

When the tumbling sequence ends, the values of all multiplier symbols on the screen are added together, and the total win of the sequence is multiplied by that sum. Because the values are summed rather than multiplied by each other, two mid-sized multipliers give a moderate boost, while a single top value is worth much more than several small ones.

Multipliers can appear in the base game as well as the bonus, but in the base game the sum only counts for the sequence in which they landed. A spin with no win has nothing for the multiplier to act on, so a multiplier symbol on its own pays nothing.

Free spins with a running total

Four or more scatters anywhere on the screen start the free spins, and the round begins with 15 spins. Three or more scatters during the round add five more.

The multiplier symbols work differently inside the bonus. Whenever one lands and the spin produces a win, its value is added to a total multiplier. That total is kept for the whole round, and whenever a new multiplier symbol lands and the spin wins, the running total is also used to multiply the win. The more of the round has passed, the more the total is worth, so the late spins tend to carry the most value.

Ante Bet

The rules describe a bet multiplier of 25x with the ante on, against 20x without it, so each spin costs 1.25 times as much. In return the chance of winning free spins naturally is doubled, because more scatter symbols are on the reels. The purchase option is disabled while the ante is active.

Buy Free Spins

The round can be bought from the base game for 100x the current total bet. Four scatters are placed on the triggering spin, and the buy is not available while the 25x ante is enabled.

The numbers

The RTP is 96.5%, which makes the house edge 3.5% and the average loss about $35 per $1,000 wagered. Our catalogue has no volatility label. A hundred spins cost $0.70 at $0.20, $3.50 at $1 and $17.50 at $5 on average.

The maximum win is limited to 15,000x the bet: $3,000 at a $0.20 stake, $15,000 at $1 and $75,000 at $5. Since the cap is far above what the averages suggest, treat it as an outer limit and not an expectation.

Original and alternatives

Our catalogue lists one other entry in the franchise, the original Starlight Princess from 2021, which lists 96.5% and a 5,000x cap. Similar games from the same studio include Gates of Olympus 1000 (96.5%, 15,000x), Sweet Bonanza 1000 (96.53%, 25,000x), Aztec Smash (96.52%, 9,000x) and Cyclops Smash (96.06%, 10,000x). A free official demo is available for Starlight Princess 1000.

Pros

  • Pay-anywhere wins from eight symbols, with no limit to tumbles
  • Multipliers from 2x to 1000x, with a running total in the free spins
  • Max win of 15,000x, three times that of the original
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • No volatility rating is published in our catalogue
  • The ante raises the cost of every spin by 25%
  • The multiplier values are summed, so small ones add little

Verdict

Starlight Princess 1000 takes a well-defined formula and raises the ceiling. A 96.5% RTP, a 3.5% house edge and a 15,000x cap frame the game, and the running multiplier in the free spins is its best feature. Volatility is not published, so use the free demo to see how often the bonus arrives. Real play is paid entertainment: a hundred spins at $1 cost about $3.50 on average.
