Space Donkey review
A monkey that is confused about its own species gets visited by aliens and decides to fight back. That is the studio's setup for Space Donkey, an arcade-flavoured slot on a six-by-six grid. The base game uses cascades and a wild that abducts symbols, but the bonus is the real departure: it is a hunt across a grid rather than a block of free spins. That affects how you read the numbers, and the numbers are worth a careful look.
Ways, cascades and the Abduction Wild
The grid is 6x6 and the studio advertises 46,656 ways to win, paying from left to right. Wins and abductions drop symbols away, and new ones fall in.
The Abduction Wild appears on reels two to six. When it takes part in a win it stays, moves down and abducts paying symbols, adding 1 to its multiplier for each one it takes. The effect is a wild that gets stronger the longer a chain runs.
Chopper and Hellfire
Three or more Chopper symbols trigger Hellfire, a feature that fires across the grid in set directions. The studio says it adds multipliers to the surrounding symbols and wilds.
Hide N' Seek and Seek N' Destroy
Three scatters send you to Hide N' Seek. The scatters become traps on a 6x6 grid, the traps stay fixed and the round runs on lives, not on a set count of spins. The monkey walks the cells, kills aliens, and picks up boosters and chests. It ends when the lives run out, or with a teleport or the Monkeypendence ending.
A Grey Chest can upgrade the round and teleport the monkey to Seek N' Destroy. Four scatters in the base game open that mode directly, according to the studio text. Here the monkey jumps between rows to shoot down alien hordes and aims at the giant Mothership. Both modes also end if the max win is reached.
Three purchase options
The Nolimit bonus buy is paid before a spin and comes in three sizes.
Hide N' Seek
Costs 79x the bet and takes you straight into the grid hunt.
Lucky Draw
Costs 143x the bet. The rules give no further detail on what it contains.
Seek N' Destroy
Costs 272x the bet and opens the shooting mode directly.
Where the return comes from
Our catalogue records one RTP, 96.07%, which makes a house edge of 3.93% or about $39.30 per $1,000 wagered. The studio's maths sheet also mentions versions of 94.13% and 92.18%, so a lower figure may exist on some sites. The same sheet splits the 96.07% into the base game at 69.56%, Hide N' Seek at 24.83% and Seek N' Destroy at 1.68%, and lists the Hide N' Seek round at about 1 in 298 spins.
That split shows how much of the return depends on a round most spins never reach. Hit frequency is 27.68%. The catalogue rates the volatility as Medium, while the studio's own text calls it High, so we state both.
Costs and neighbours
A 100-spin session costs $0.79 on average at $0.20, $3.93 at $1 and $19.65 at $5. The max win, which the game calls Safe Word, is 14,649x: $2,929.80 at $0.20, $14,649 at $1 and $73,245 at $5.
Other Medium games with similar numbers include Kiss My Chainsaw at 96.1% and 10,900x, Breakout at 96.07% and 20,000x, Dragon Tribe at 96.07% and 27,000x, and Roadkill at 96.04% and 11,091x.
Pros
- A 27.68% hit frequency keeps the base game active
- Abduction Wilds grow with every symbol they take
- A bonus that is a grid hunt, unlike standard free spins
- Three purchase options from 79x to 272x the bet
Cons
- Catalogue and studio disagree on volatility (Medium against High)
- About a quarter of the return sits in the Hide N' Seek round
- Lower RTP versions of 94.13% and 92.18% are mentioned in the studio sheet
- No official free demo is listed in our catalogue
Verdict
Space Donkey is a retro novelty on top of a solid cascade engine, with a bonus that plays like a small arcade game. The 96.07% RTP gives a 3.93% house edge, and the volatility is Medium in our catalogue but High in the studio's text, so plan for swings. Since a quarter of the return lives in a rare round, budget as for any paid entertainment and check the RTP the game shows.
