Ding Dong Death review

The studio calls this a clubhouse at the edge of the graveyard, where the gang is pale, a little tied up and acting strangely since they died. In rules terms, that means a six-reel, three-row ways game in which avalanches are the currency. Every third one moves a five-level Death Meter along, and each level changes a character symbol type into Wilds for the round. The bonus rounds then keep that progress instead of resetting it.

Where a win comes from

The layout is 3-3-3-3-3-3, six reels of three rows, and wins pay from left to right as ways. The official text does not print the number of ways. Wins and the Knock Knock feature both trigger a collapse: symbols are removed and new ones fall in, and the cycle continues while more wins appear.

Wild symbols carry the action. An xNudge Wild drops to the bottom of its reel and then expands to fill it, adding 1 to its multiplier on each pass. An xSplit Wild splits and doubles a row, with the scatter excluded, and it doubles an xNudge multiplier if it splits one.

The five-level Death Meter

Every third avalanche unlocks the next level of the meter, which works in the main game and in the bonus rounds. An unlocked level converts all instances of one designated character type into Wilds until the round ends, so the board gets richer as a chain goes on.

Level five is the special one. The first time it unlocks, it sets a global multiplier of 2x, and each later unlock raises that multiplier by 1. It can also fire a Mental Patient, an xSplit Wild or an xNudge Wild before locking again.

Knock Knock and Mental Patients

This feature turns a dead spin into something. When three or more of the same symbol line up horizontally and no win is paid, they are removed. Mental Patients are placed in the middle, and the multiplier already earned is kept. Other symbols explode, apart from scatters, Wilds and other Mental Patients, which causes a collapse.

Mental Patient

A wild-like special created by Knock Knock or by the level five feature. It behaves like a wild during collapses.

Two bonus rounds

Three, four or five scatters award 7, 9 or 11 Ding Dong Spins, and six scatters award 13 Ding Dong Death Spins. A scatter landing during either round adds one spin. In both, the Death Meter and the global multiplier do not reset between spins.

The bigger round raises the pace of the multiplier: each unlocked meter level adds 1 to the global multiplier, level five adds only 1 and has no special feature, and an xNudge win adds to the global multiplier. Both rounds end after the last spin or at the 14,280x cap, which the game calls Knock Knock Who's There?

Paying for meter levels

Several options are bought before the spin. They change the cost per spin, not the way the maths works.

Bonus Booster

Costs 2x the bet and makes the Ding Dong Spins and Death Spins three times as likely to trigger.

Death Meter 3, 4 and 5

Priced at 50x, 100x and 200x the bet. Each unlocks the matching meter level right away.

xNudge Booster

Costs 300x the bet and places an xNudge Wild on reel three or four.

xTra Spin

Offered after a bonus, with the price worked out from meter levels and the multiplier. It lets you keep the meter and multiplier for another spin, but only when its price does not exceed the total win.

Numbers and alternatives

The only RTP on record is 96.08%, a house edge of 3.92%, or about $39.20 per $1,000 wagered. Hit frequency is 20.02% and volatility is High. A 100-spin session costs $0.78 on average at $0.20, $3.92 at $1 and $19.60 at $5. The max win is 14,280x, or $2,856 at $0.20, $14,280 at $1 and $71,400 at $5.

Similar High games reach higher ceilings. The Crypt lists 96.05% and 27,000x, Gluttony lists 96.09% and 32,000x, and Blood and Shadow 2 sits at 96.09% with 16,161x.

Pros

  • Death Meter progress and the global multiplier carry through the bonus rounds
  • Knock Knock turns a no-win spin into a collapse
  • Hit frequency of 20.02% at a 96.08% RTP
  • Several buy options from 2x to 300x the bet

Cons

  • High volatility, and the top meter level takes many avalanches to reach
  • The max win of 14,280x trails several similar High games
  • The number of ways is not printed in the official rules
  • No official free demo is listed in our catalogue

Verdict

Ding Dong Death rewards patience with a design that is easy to follow: build avalanches, climb the meter, and the bonus rounds keep what you built. The 96.08% RTP means a 3.92% house edge, and the volatility is High. A 14,280x ceiling is lower than the headline numbers of some similar games, so treat it as paid entertainment and keep to a budget.
