The Crypt 2 review

The Crypt 2 is Nolimit City's sequel set among undead music legends, and it is mostly an exercise in unlocking things. The board starts small, with the top three rows sealed, and every feature in the game is a different key. Tumbling wins, resizing symbols, a nudging wild and an eye-collecting multiplier all feed into one outcome: how tall and how heavily multiplied the grid becomes before the spin ends.

A grid that has to be earned

On paper the layout is six reels by seven rows, but only four rows are active at the start of a spin. The top three are locked until a Forsaken Fingers symbol arrives. When it does, it opens the nearest locked positions on its own reel and the neighbouring ones, then turns into a wild.

Wins are ways wins, read from left to right, and they tumble: winning symbols explode and new ones fall in, while locked positions stay where they are. The studio says that with the whole grid open and xWays in play, the number of ways can reach 531,441. That is a ceiling of possibility, not what a typical spin shows.

The mechanics, one by one

The studio built several modifiers that work together. Knowing what each one does makes the bonus round far easier to follow.

xWays

A mystery symbol that can land on any reel. It reveals two or three matching symbols, which expands the reel to as many as nine positions high. Combined with an unlocked grid, this is the route to the very large ways counts the studio quotes.

xNudge Wild

When it lands, this wild nudges down to the bottom of its reel. Its multiplier rises with each step, and the values are additive. The multiplier applies only to the wins the wild itself takes part in, so a nudge in a losing position adds nothing.

Forsaken Fingers

The key to the top rows. It unlocks locked positions around it and becomes a wild. More open rows mean more symbols per reel, which means more ways for later tumbles.

Eye Collector and Spider

Dead Legend symbols carry eyes. The Collector gathers them, and every five eyes adds 1 to the total win multiplier, after which the Collector turns wild. The Spider needs the Collector in play and adds four, eight or twelve eyes.

Entombed Spins

Three or more scatters start the bonus. Each scatter adds two spins and each Red Moon scatter adds three. Unlocked positions and the total win multiplier carry over from spin to spin, so a round gets stronger as it goes.

Progress is tracked with gems. Four gems fill one level on a Dead Legend, a level-up awards two extra spins, and the eye counts for that legend double with each level. The round ends when the spins run out or the 31,248x cap is reached.

The booster menu

Instead of one bonus buy, the game offers a ladder of boosters bought before a spin. The Bonus Booster costs 2x the bet and triples the odds of Entombed Spins. Forsaken Fingers costs 20x and ensures at least three of those symbols appear. The xWays plus seven rows option costs 30x and gives at least two xWays on seven active rows. xNudge plus seven rows costs 90x with at least one Nudge included, and Eye Collector plus seven rows costs 199x with the Collector and the Spider in play.

Each step raises what you pay per spin, so the cost of a session rises with it. The listed RTP of 96.1% is the figure for the default game.

Numbers and sibling games

The only RTP version on record is 96.1%, a house edge of 3.9% and about $39 lost per $1,000 wagered. The catalogue rates the volatility Very high, while the studio's own page calls it Extreme, a 10 out of 10 on its scale, so both labels are published. Hit frequency is 20.26%.

One hundred spins at $0.20 cost $0.78 on average, at $1 they cost $3.90, and at $5, or $500 wagered, they cost $19.50. The 31,248x maximum is worth $6,249.60 at a $0.20 bet, $31,248 at $1 and $156,240 at $5.

The original The Crypt is the only earlier entry in the catalogue, at 96.05% with High volatility and a 27,000x cap. Other Very high games nearby include Stockholm Syndrome at 96.08% and 28,873x, and Fire in the Hole 2 at 96.07% and 65,000x.

Pros

  • Several layered mechanics (xWays, nudging wilds, eye multipliers) reward learning how they interact
  • Entombed Spins keep unlocked positions and multipliers from spin to spin
  • Five booster options priced from 2x to 199x let you choose how much to pay per spin
  • 31,248x max win, up from the original's 27,000x

Cons

  • Complex rules; a first-time player has a lot to absorb
  • Very high volatility (Extreme by the studio's own scale) means large swings
  • No free demo is listed for this game

Verdict

The Crypt 2 is built for players who like machinery. A 96.1% RTP, a 3.9% house edge, Very high volatility and a 31,248x ceiling set the frame, and the unlocking grid, the eye multiplier and the gem levels fill it. The boosters make each spin more expensive, so it is worth knowing what a session costs on average: about $3.90 per 100 spins at a $1 bet. Play it as paid entertainment with a fixed limit.
