The Border review

The Border is a 6x6 cluster game from Nolimit City set among patrol agents, cartel bosses and the wall between them. Groups of five or more touching symbols pay and explode, and two wild types grow the multiplier as the board collapses. The bonus is split into Mule Spins and Coyote Spins, the second keeping its multiplier for the whole round. One rule stands out: under xRip, a spin that wins less than the stake pays nothing at all.

Clusters, collapses and xRip

Symbols pay in clusters of 5 or more that touch horizontally or vertically. Winning clusters are destroyed and new symbols drop into the gaps, so a single spin can produce a chain of wins. The published hit frequency is 29.58%, close to three spins in ten.

The rules describe an xRip mechanic: if the total win of a spin is below the base stake, there is no payout. In practice this removes the small part-refunds that many slots hand out, so spins either pay at least the stake or pay nothing. The RTP is unchanged, but more of it is concentrated in larger results.

Two wilds that build the multiplier

Both special wilds raise the win multiplier, and an xSplit can boost either of them.

xNudge Cluster Wild

When it is part of a winning cluster, it nudges up or down through the cluster and adds 1 to the multiplier for every symbol it passes. If it has been split, its own split value is added first, before the nudging begins.

xBomb Wild

Removes the symbols around it, except scatters and xNudge wilds, and adds 1 to the multiplier for the next collapse. A split xBomb adds its split count instead of 1.

Mule Spins and Coyote Spins

This game needs more scatters than most: six start 10 Mule Spins, and seven start Coyote Spins with 12, plus 2 for every scatter beyond seven. If a further scatter lands during Mule Spins, the round upgrades to Coyote Spins, with 2 extra spins per scatter.

According to the game page, xWays symbols in Mule Spins infect the cluster symbols on the same reel, splitting them and adding ways. In Coyote Spins the infection spreads to cluster symbols across the whole board, and, per the rules, the win multiplier, xCluster and xNudge values never reset between spins.

xCluster

Bonus only. From the second unique cluster in a sequence onwards, each extra cluster adds 1 to the win multiplier at once. In Coyote Spins those increases carry over from spin to spin.

Boosted xRip and the buy menu

Boosted xRip costs 50% more per spin, 1.5 times the stake, and places a scatter on reel 1, which helps towards the six needed. The no-pay-below-stake rule still applies while it is on.

Direct bonus buys range from 98x to 914x the bet according to our source, without individual prices. At a $1 stake, the most expensive option costs $914.

Neither option changes the long-run return in our data. Boosted xRip spreads a higher price across every spin to reach the bonus more often, while a buy pays for one round up front. Both increase how much money moves through the game in a session, which is the figure a budget should be set against.

Numbers and neighbours

The RTP is 96.17%, a house edge of 3.83%, about $38.30 per $1,000 wagered across a long run. A hundred spins cost on average $0.77 at $0.20, $3.83 at $1 and $19.15 at $5.

Our catalogue rates the volatility High, while the game page calls it Extreme. The Seized and Destroyed cap is 44,288x the bet, $8,857.60 at a $0.20 stake and $44,288 at $1. Among High-rated relatives, Misery Mining lists 96.09% with 70,000x, Das xBoot 96.03% with 55,200x, and Evil Goblins xBomb 96.14% with 31,969x.

The Border suits players who like cluster mechanics and are content with a game that skips small wins entirely. Because xRip removes payouts below the stake, expect more spins that return nothing than the hit frequency alone might suggest.

Pros

  • Two multiplier-building wilds: xNudge Cluster and xBomb
  • Coyote Spins keep all multipliers for the whole round
  • Mule Spins upgrade to Coyote with an extra scatter
  • 96.17% RTP with a published hit frequency of 29.58%

Cons

  • xRip pays nothing on spins that win less than the stake
  • Six scatters needed for the bonus
  • Volatility is High in our data and Extreme on the game page

Verdict

The Border is a cluster game with sharp edges: wilds that nudge and explode to grow the multiplier, a Coyote bonus that never resets it, and an xRip rule that removes small wins altogether. The RTP is 96.17% and the volatility is High, or Extreme by the game page's label. The 44,288x cap is a remote outcome. With a 3.83% house edge, play it as paid entertainment within a set limit.
