Dark Summoning review

Dark Summoning is a cascading slot on a tall grid, six rows by five reels, with 24 paylines and a collection mechanic that decides which bonus opens. Hacksaw Gaming asks the player to gather three Unholy symbols over a round, and whether an Order symbol is present at that moment chooses between two different bonus features. There are also four recorded RTP versions, which matters more here than in most reviews.

Four RTP versions, one game

The headline RTP is 96.36%, a house edge of 3.64% and an average loss of $36.40 per $1,000 wagered. The pack records three further versions: 94.34% (house edge 5.66%), 92.22% (7.78%) and 88.28% (11.72%). On the same $1,000 those cost $56.60, $77.80 and $117.20 on average.

Over 100 spins, the headline version costs $0.73 at a $0.20 bet, $3.64 at $1 and $18.20 at $5. The lowest version costs $2.34, $11.72 and $58.60 for the same spins. The studio's rules do not say which version is active where a game is offered, so check the game's information screen before playing.

Cascades and wild multipliers

Wins pay on 24 predefined lines from left to right. After every win all symbols of the winning type are marked and removed once the wins are awarded, and new symbols cascade in to fill the gaps. Further wins are possible, and so are further cascades.

Wild multipliers

Wilds substitute for all other symbols. A blue Wild appears in the base game and in Rise to Salvation, a red Wild in Trial by Hellfire, and there is no functional difference. A Wild may carry 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x or 100x.

Will of the Order

When an Order scatter lands it replaces itself and between 1 and 9 other symbols with Wilds, with or without multipliers. If several Order symbols land together, the feature is triggered once for each of them.

Collecting Unholy symbols

Unholy scatters that land together with at least one win are collected in the top-right corner and saved for the round. If three Unholy symbols land at once, they are collected immediately, with or without a win. Collecting three in a round opens a bonus, and an Order symbol on the screen when the third one is collected changes which bonus it is.

Trial by Hellfire and Rise to Salvation

Both bonuses begin with 10 free spins. They differ in how they treat the board.

In Trial by Hellfire every winning position is marked with Hellfire. When an Unholy symbol lands, the Fires of Hell sequence begins: the symbol and every Hellfire-marked position become Wilds, with or without multipliers, and the Hellfire is removed. Wins therefore feed the next set of Wilds.

In Rise to Salvation the direction of the drop and cascade is reversed, so symbols move upwards. Lost Soul symbols stay on the reels once they land, until the bonus ends or until they Ascend.

Volatility, cap and buying

Volatility is High, and the maximum win is 10,666 times the bet: $2,133.20 at $0.20, $10,666 at $1 and $53,330 at $5. The rules mention a bonus buy and ante-style options, but the cost multipliers are set at runtime and are not stated, so they are not quoted. No free demo is listed on the official page.

Similar High volatility games

Densho lists 96.4% with a 10,000x cap, Mighty Masks 96.3% with 10,000x and Grug Make Fire 96.19% with 10,000x. Death Becomes You and Red Rascal both list 96.34% as High, and Vending Machine is Medium at 96.28% with 5,000x.

Pros

  • Cascades with Wild multipliers from 2x to 100x
  • Two different 10-spin bonuses with their own board rules
  • Order scatter can create up to ten Wilds from one landing
  • Headline RTP of 96.36% leaves a 3.64% house edge

Cons

  • Four RTP versions are recorded, down to 88.28% with a house edge of 11.72%
  • Buy and ante costs are not stated in our sources
  • No free demo is listed on the official page

Verdict

Dark Summoning has more structure than its grid suggests: cascades, wild multipliers, a collection meter and two bonuses with different board rules. The headline 96.36% RTP is reasonable, but the 88.28% version costs more than three times as much per $1,000, so the active version matters. With High volatility and a 10,666x cap, small stakes are the sensible choice.
