Duck Hunters 2 review

In Duck Hunters 2 the ducks have come back with an attitude problem, and Granny is reaching for her shotgun. Nolimit City's sequel keeps a pay-anywhere grid but makes position multipliers the centre of everything: each square of the board remembers its wins and doubles its multiplier when it pays again, up to x16,384. Bombs, xWays and a long menu of optional bets sit on top of that.

Squares that remember

The grid is five reels of six rows. A win needs 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on it. Winning symbols are removed, new ones drop in, and each position where a symbol was removed gains a x2 multiplier. If a position that already holds a multiplier is part of another win on a later drop, its value doubles. Random multipliers are also scattered across the board at the start of each spin.

The ceiling per position is x16,384. In practice, the longer a chain of drops keeps hitting the same area of the board, the more those squares are worth. A Wild substitutes for any normal paying symbol to help these clusters form.

Bombs and xWays

Two symbols push the multipliers up faster than wins alone.

Bomb

Fires only when no winning combination is left on the board. It removes itself and every symbol above it on its reel, then raises its own position multiplier by x2, the one above by x4, the next by x8 and so on up the column. All Bombs explode before the next drop, and Bonus symbols are not affected.

xWays and Infectious xWays

An xWays symbol becomes a regular paying symbol and raises its position multiplier by 2, 4 or 8 times. The infectious version also makes every matching symbol on the board expand to the same size. If several land together, they all reveal the same symbol.

Hunting seasons: the free spins

Three Bonus symbols give 7 Duck Hunt Spins, four give 8 Hawk Eye Spins and five give 10 Big Game Spins. Position multipliers stay on the board for the whole round instead of resetting, and an Extra +1 Shot symbol adds a spin.

Each round also hands out random upgrades from a list of six, one in Duck Hunt, two in Hawk Eye and three in Big Game. They include Upgraded xWays, which makes every xWays infectious; an Upgraded Bomb, which clears both up and down its reel and boosts the multipliers in both directions; Extra +2 Shots, worth two spins each; +2 Upgrades; Extra Multipliers; and +1 Spin. The round ends when spins run out or at the 40,000x cap, called DUCK MAN RETURNS.

A long list of extras

Duck Hunters 2 has more optional purchases than most slots, so it pays to know what each one costs.

Bonus Booster and Bonus Hunt

The Bonus Booster costs 3x the bet and places a Bonus symbol on reel 2. Bonus Hunt costs 30x and adds a Bonus symbol on the first drop and on every win or Bomb drop that follows.

Day spins

Every position starts with a set multiplier: x8 for 10x the bet, x64 for 90x, x512 for 800x and x2048 for 4,000x. They raise the starting point rather than the odds of a win.

Juicers and Side Hustle

The xWays Juicer costs 500x for 7 Duck Hunt Spins with Infectious xWays on every spin; the Bomb Juicer costs 2,800x for 7 spins with an Upgraded Bomb on each. Side Hustle offers optional side bets with fixed payouts on named outcomes.

The sequel by the numbers

The official page gives a 96% RTP, so the house edge is 4%, about $40 for every $1,000 staked over time. A 100-spin session averages $0.80 at $0.20, $4 at $1 and $20 at $5. Hit frequency is 17.68%, fewer than one spin in five, and volatility is rated High.

The 40,000x cap is $8,000 at $0.20 and $200,000 at $5. The original Duck Hunters is listed at 96.05% with a 30,000x cap, also rated High, so the sequel trades a fraction of RTP for a higher ceiling. Duck Hunters: Happy Hour lists 96.07% with 33,333x.

Pros

  • Position multipliers persist through the free spins and reach x16,384
  • Bombs turn dead boards into multiplier ladders
  • Bonus rounds award 1 to 3 random upgrades
  • High rather than Very high volatility

Cons

  • Hit frequency of 17.68%
  • So many paid options that costs are easy to lose track of
  • RTP of 96% is slightly below the original's 96.05%

Verdict

Duck Hunters 2 is built around one strong idea, squares that double their multiplier every time they pay again, and surrounds it with Bombs, xWays and three tiers of upgraded free spins. The 96% RTP means a 4% house edge, volatility is High, and the 40,000x cap tops the original. The optional purchases range from 3x to 4,000x; decide in advance which, if any, fit your budget.
