Mighty Masks review

Hacksaw Gaming sends this one to the far reaches of the savannah, in search of the secrets of the masks. The grid is four rows by five reels with 20 paylines, so the layout is familiar. The twist is in two linked ideas: masks that all reveal the same thing, and a multiplier wheel beside the reels that can be nudged up to 50 times. The bonus round turns up the frequency of both.

Mystery Masks

A Mystery Mask hides either an ordinary paying symbol or a Wild. When several masks land on one spin, they all reveal the same thing, so the outcome is either a row of matching symbols or a patch of wilds. If masks land on three or more reels, they spread downward to the bottom of their reels, which covers much more of the grid.

That all-or-nothing reveal is the base game's main source of variance. It matters most when the masks land in a spot that matches one of the 20 lines running left to right.

The Multiplier Wheel and NUDGEREELS

The Nudge Wild is the trigger for the wheel. If it lands together with at least one winning combination, the Multiplier Wheel next to the grid activates and spins to a multiplier that applies to the total of all wins on that spin. A Nudge Wild can also carry a nudge value. In that case the wheel is nudged as well, and the studio says the wheel can be nudged up to 50 times.

Because the multiplier applies to the whole spin, a Nudge Wild landing with a big mask reveal is the combination to look for. The studio text we hold does not list the values on the wheel, so we do not state them.

Serengeti Sunset

Landing at least three free spin scatters together in the base game opens the bonus. The number of scatters sets the starting length of the round.

Three scatters

Start the round with 10 spins.

Four scatters

Start the round with 12 spins.

Five scatters

Start the round with 14 spins.

What changes in the bonus

The round plays like the base game, with more Mystery Mask and Nudge Wild symbols than before. Additional scatters landing together during the round award extra spins. Since both main features appear more often, most of the 10,000x potential sits here.

The game also offers an ante-style option and three bonus-buy choices. The prices are not stated in the data we hold, so we quote none; check them on the buy screen before using them.

Four versions of the return

Our catalogue lists RTPs of 96.3%, 94.2%, 92.26% and 88.38%, with the first as the headline. The studio's rules page only shows a placeholder, so we cannot say which one a given site offers. The house edge is 3.7%, 5.8%, 7.74% and 11.62% respectively.

At the top version the average loss is $37 per $1,000 wagered, and at the lowest it is $116.20. In a 100-spin session at $1 that is $3.70 against $11.62, and at $5 it is $18.50 against $58.10. Volatility is High. The max win is 10,000x the bet, or $2,000 at $0.20 and $50,000 at $5.

Densho lists 96.4% and Drop'em lists 96.21%, both High with 10,000x. Dark Summoning reaches 96.36% with 10,666x.

Pros

  • Mystery Masks can turn a spin into a full set of matching symbols or wilds
  • A multiplier wheel applies to the total of all wins on a spin
  • Starting bonus length of 10, 12 or 14 spins, with extra spins available
  • Top RTP of 96.3% with a 10,000x max win

Cons

  • Four RTP versions, with the lowest at 88.38% and an 11.62% house edge
  • High volatility
  • Buy and ante prices are not stated in the data we hold
  • No official free demo is listed in our catalogue

Verdict

Mighty Masks is a compact High volatility payline slot whose two features, masks and a multiplier wheel, are easy to grasp and become more frequent in the Serengeti Sunset round. At 96.3% the house edge is 3.7%, but the lowest listed version is 88.38%, so the RTP the game shows matters more than usual. Treat it as paid entertainment with uneven results and keep stakes small.
