Rock Bottom review

Rock Bottom is a slot with a dark subject and a very plain structure underneath. Nolimit City builds it on five stages that mirror the stages of grief, and the bonus round advances through them as scatters arrive. Each stage changes what the character symbols do. If a win passes 1,969 times the bet, a final multiplier pick can lift it towards the cap.

Layout and the base game

The studio describes a 3-4-4-4-3 layout with 576 ways to win, paid from left to right. The rules summary we hold lists the rows only as three to four, so the shape comes from the studio text. Our catalogue records no tumbles and no ante or purchase option for the game.

The Scatter doubles as a Wild. An xSplit Wild can land on the middle three reels as a double Wild, and it splits the character symbols on its row and the first and last positions next to it. According to the studio, this can happen up to three times for one character, which makes large symbols.

Five stages of grief

The stages are named by the studio: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. In the game they work as levels of the bonus.

Collecting five Scatters moves the round to the next stage and adds two spins. Characters whose stage has been reached change form, and those that have not yet been reached gain 1 to their multiplier each time they land. That makes progress the main source of value in the bonus.

Headshrinker Spins

Three or four Scatters open this round with five spins, and each Scatter that nudges to the bottom adds one more. A character at a reached stage expands to four symbols high. Characters not yet reached collect multiplier points instead.

Insanity Spins

Five Scatters open this round, also with five spins and the same stage economy. Here the characters at reached stages become expanding Wilds, and their multipliers are added to those of other expanded characters, which is where the biggest combinations come from.

xCap Downfall

If the total win passes 1,969 times the bet, the xCap Downfall feature starts. The player picks one of five multipliers: 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x or 10x. It is applied to 1,969 times the bet, giving a result from 3,938 up to 19,690 times the bet, and the round ends there. The top result is also the game's cap.

A note on buying and boosters

The studio's text mentions an xBet option that costs extra and places a Scatter on the second reel. Our data holds no price for it, and the feature-buy text in the rules summary appears to belong to another title, so nothing here is quoted about purchases. No free demo is listed on the official page.

RTP, volatility and cost

RTP is 96.04%, a house edge of 3.96% and $39.60 lost per $1,000 wagered. Our catalogue lists Medium volatility, while the studio's page calls it High. Both labels are published. The hit frequency is 31.3%, so about one spin in three pays something.

A hundred spins cost $0.79 on average at $0.20, $3.96 at $1 and $19.80 at $5. The maximum win of 19,690 times the bet is $3,938 at $0.20, $19,690 at $1 and $98,450 at $5.

Other Medium games

Breakout lists 96.07% with a 20,000x cap, The Cage 96.05% with 25,000x and Dragon Tribe 96.07% with 27,000x. Space Donkey (14,649x), Roadkill (11,091x) and Kiss My Chainsaw (10,900x) all have lower caps.

Pros

  • Five bonus stages give the free spins a clear structure
  • Hit frequency of 31.3% means about one spin in three pays
  • xCap Downfall lets a large win be lifted with a 2x to 10x pick
  • Insanity Spins combine expanding Wilds with added multipliers

Cons

  • The subject matter is heavy and will not suit every player
  • Volatility is Medium in the catalogue and High on the studio page
  • No free demo is listed, and no buy prices are available in our data

Verdict

Rock Bottom is a staged bonus game with a heavy theme. The 96.04% RTP gives a 3.96% house edge, the volatility is Medium by our catalogue and High by the studio, and the cap is 19,690x. The two labels disagree, which argues for small stakes while the pace is learned, and for skipping the game altogether if the subject is unwelcome.
