Dead Canary review

An angry dwarf goes looking for true love down a mine, armed with explosives and a few unlucky canaries. Dead Canary turns that dark joke into a slot where birds are the collectors: they gather values during the bonus, but only pay when they die. Around them, Nolimit City places a staggered 3-4-3-4-3-4 grid, avalanching wins, diagonal Wild Mining and cross-shaped xBomb blasts.

A staggered mine shaft

The base game uses six reels that alternate between three and four rows. Wins are counted as ways from the left, and every win explodes so new symbols can fall into the gaps, letting one spin chain into several payouts.

The studio page adds that parts of the board start blocked off by barriers that have to be blasted open. The rules confirm barriers exist through the xBet option, which unlocks the first one. Because the reels are offset, combinations can be harder to read at a glance than on a square grid.

Explosives in the base game

Two mechanics turn near misses and Wilds into chain reactions.

Wild Mining

Fires when 3, 4 or 5 of the same paying symbol line up diagonally without forming a win. That diagonal is converted into 1, 2 or 3 Wild bombs, and the other symbols in the line are cleared, except xBombs. A Scatter caught in the blast is replaced rather than lost.

xBomb

A Wild that substitutes in a win and then explodes in a cross shape, removing the surrounding symbols. Each explosion adds 1 to the multiplier for the next win. The blast spares Scatters and other bombs, so it clears space without destroying the bonus symbols.

xBet

Raises the stake by 40%, to 1.4 times the base bet. In return a Scatter is placed on the board and the first barrier starts unlocked, giving each paid spin a head start.

Canary Freespins: birds, cages and vaults

Any three Scatters start Canary Freespins. The board grows to seven reels in a 4-3-4-3-4-3-4 pattern, and four vaults appear in the corners. The triggering Scatters stay on the board as caged canaries, each with 3 hit points.

Cages come in two kinds. A Silver cage collects from the positions diagonally adjacent to it, in an X shape. A Gold cage collects along its full diagonal rows, covering far more of the board. What a bird gathers is held, not paid: the value is awarded only when that canary loses its last hit point. That makes the round unusual, because damage to a bird is how it pays out.

The corner vaults collect from their three neighbouring positions. They have to be opened by an xBomb, and what they hold is paid at the end of the free spins. The round finishes when the birds are dead, when the spins are used up or when winnings reach the 65,000x cap, which the game calls Happy Wife, Happy Life. Our source does not print a fixed number of free spins.

Paying for the bonus

The Nolimit Bonus Buy offers direct entry to the features at prices between 68x and 500x the bet. The pack lists only the range, not a price per option. Either way, buying a bonus raises the amount at risk in one go without changing the house edge. Because the free spin length is not fixed in our source, the value of a purchase is especially hard to judge in advance.

Dead Canary in numbers

The RTP is 96.02%, the only version listed, so the house edge stands at 3.98%. Over a long sample that is about $39.80 per $1,000 wagered. In 100-spin sessions the averages are $0.80 at $0.20, $3.98 at $1 and $19.90 at $5. Hit frequency is 26.2%, close to one paying spin in four.

Our catalogue gives the volatility as Very high, while the studio page rates it Extreme. The 65,000x cap is $13,000 at $0.20 and $325,000 at $5. No series is listed. Fire in the Hole 2 shares the 65,000x cap at 96.07%, and Kenneth Must Die reaches 69,000x at 96.04%, both rated Very high.

Pros

  • Wild Mining turns diagonal near misses into Wild bombs
  • Two cage types give the bonus collectors different reach
  • Corner vaults add a second source of value in the free spins
  • A 65,000x cap with a 26.2% hit frequency

Cons

  • Collected values pay only when a canary dies, which takes time to learn
  • Very high volatility, rated Extreme by the studio
  • Bonus Buy prices are given only as a 68x to 500x range

Verdict

Dead Canary is one of the more intricate designs in this style: offset reels, diagonal Wild Mining, cross-blasting xBombs and a bonus where caged birds collect and pay on death while vaults fill in the corners. The 96.02% RTP gives a 3.98% house edge, and the volatility is Very high, or Extreme by the studio's own rating. It suits players who want depth and accept long dry spells; decide your limit first.
