Fire In The Hole review

Underground, with a dwarf, dynamite and a mine that opens up as you dig: Nolimit City's slot from March 2021 starts on a 6x3 board with 64 ways and can collapse its way to a 6x6 board with 46,656 ways. Explosions are not decoration here; they are the mechanic. Each win or blast unlocks another row, xBomb wilds raise a multiplier, and the Lucky Wagon Spins bonus runs on coins and enhancers. The ceiling is 60,000x the bet.

How the mine opens

Every win and every explosion triggers a collapse. Winning symbols are cleared, new ones fall in, and the grid unlocks an extra row, up to a maximum of six. A spin that keeps hitting therefore keeps growing, which is how the way count climbs from 64 towards 46,656.

The studio publishes a hit frequency of 25.98%, so roughly one spin in four produces some kind of win. Most of those will be small; the big outcomes need the grid to open far and the multiplier to build. Patience with the many small hits is part of the design.

Explosives and helpers

Three named mechanics shape the base game.

Collapsing Mine

Consecutive cascades follow every winning spin or explosive event. The winning symbols clear, fresh items fall down, and one more row of the grid becomes active, up to six rows. The deeper the chain, the more ways are in play for the next collapse.

Wild Mining

If a spin brings no win but three, four or five identical symbols line up horizontally, Wild Mining activates. It clears positions and inserts up to three wild symbols, giving a dead spin a second chance to connect.

xBomb

Nolimit City's own explosive wild. It substitutes for standard symbols and then detonates, blowing away the icons next to it. Each detonation raises the win multiplier by one for the following collapse, whether or not the xBomb was part of a win.

Lucky Wagon Spins

Three, four or five bonus symbols trigger the feature, and the count decides how much of the grid is open at the start: two, three or four rows. The round begins with three spins, and the counter returns to three each time a new coin lands in the active area.

A train row runs across the top of the grid and reveals an enhancer for each position. Options include coin values, multipliers, dynamite, bags, chests and the dwarf modifier. An enhancer fires straight away when a coin lands directly underneath it. Starting with more rows open gives coins more room to land, which is why the five-symbol entry is the strongest of the three.

Lucky Wagon enhancers

The wagon row reveals coin values, multipliers, dynamite, bags, chests or the dwarf modifier. Each one activates the moment a coin lands below its position, so the layout of the active rows decides which enhancers come into play.

Risk, return and the 60,000x cap

The RTP is 96.06%, a single version, so the house edge is 3.94% and the long-run cost is about $39.40 for each $1,000 wagered.

Our catalogue rates the volatility High, while the studio's page text describes the rating as Extreme. Either way, wide swings are expected. Average costs of 100 spins are $0.79 at $0.20, $3.94 at $1 and $19.70 at $5.

The 60,000x maximum equals $12,000 on a $0.20 spin, $60,000 on $1 and $300,000 on $5. A result anywhere near that needs the board, the multiplier and the wagon enhancers to line up, so it is an extreme outlier.

Deeper shafts: the sequels

Fire in the Hole 2 lists 96.07% with Very high volatility and a 65,000x cap, and Fire in the Hole 3 lists 96.05% with 70,000x. Among similar games, Misery Mining also reaches 70,000x at 96.09%, Das xBoot offers 96.03% with 55,200x, and The Border has 96.17% with 44,288x, all rated High.

The sequels keep the volatility at the top of the scale while nudging the ceiling higher. Their RTPs, 96.07% and 96.05%, are practically the same as the original, so the choice between them comes down to the mechanics and the size of the cap rather than the long-run cost.

Pros

  • The grid can expand from 64 to 46,656 ways in a single spin
  • xBomb raises the multiplier for the next collapse with every detonation
  • Wild Mining can rescue non-winning spins with up to three wilds
  • 60,000x maximum win

Cons

  • Very swingy: High in our catalogue, Extreme according to the studio
  • 96.06% RTP, a 3.94% house edge
  • Many interacting mechanics take time to learn

Verdict

Fire In The Hole turns every win into excavation: rows unlock, xBombs raise the multiplier and Wild Mining patches dead spins. The Lucky Wagon Spins add coin-driven enhancers on top. The RTP is 96.06%, the volatility is High in our data and Extreme by the studio's description, and the cap is 60,000x. It suits players who accept long dry spells, play small stakes and treat the 3.94% house edge as the price of the show.
