Duck Hunters: Happy Hour review

Duck Hunters: Happy Hour finds Bubba several beers in, unsure whether there are more ducks than before or he is just seeing double. Nolimit City builds this spin-off on a diamond-shaped board, six reels running 4-5-6-6-5-4, where symbols pay anywhere and every square can grow its own multiplier. The distinctive piece is the Bomb, which here blasts a 3x3 area and leaves something useful behind.

A board shaped like a diamond

The two middle reels hold six symbols each, the outer ones four, and the reels in between five. Any 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on the board form a win. Those symbols then vanish and new ones fall into place.

Every vacated square picks up a x2 multiplier. If the same square wins again on a later drop, its value doubles, and so on up to x8,192 per square. Because the middle reels are taller, more of the board sits in the centre, which is where clusters, and therefore multipliers, are most likely to build. The Wild covers every symbol except the Bonus.

The 3x3 Bomb

This is the main change from a plain cascade game.

Bomb

Explodes in a 3x3 area around itself and doubles the multipliers on every square it hits. The cleared squares then reveal a mid-paying symbol, a Wild, an Infectious xWays or another Bomb, so one blast can set up the next. Bonus symbols and Wilds survive the explosion.

xWays and Infectious xWays

xWays turns into a regular paying symbol and multiplies its square's value by 2, 4 or 8. The infectious form also makes every identical symbol on the grid expand to the same size, which can link multipliers spread across the board.

Three rounds, three upgrade levels

The free spins follow a tiered pattern. Three Bonus symbols bring 7 Duck Hunt Spins with one upgrade picked at random from three. Four bring 8 Hawk Eye Spins with two upgrades. Five bring 10 Big Game Spins with all three upgrades switched on from the start. Shot symbols worth +1 or +2 extend any round.

The square multipliers do not reset between spins inside a round, so a board that has been building for several spins keeps all of that value. The pack does not name the three upgrades. Every round ends when its spins run out or at the 33,333x cap, which carries the name Too Drunk To Miss.

Shortcuts at the bar

The Bonus Booster costs 2x the bet. It puts a Bonus symbol on reel 2 and, according to the rules, makes the free spins five times more likely. Day 8 Spins cost 10x and start every square at x8; Day 64 Spins cost 90x and start every square at x64.

Happy Hour Spins are the expensive option at 3,000x the bet: every square starts at x8 and the two middle reels are filled with Bombs on the first drop. After a sequence, an Extra Spin may be offered that keeps the multipliers, provided its cost is no more than the win.

Odds and siblings

An RTP of 96.07% gives a 3.93% house edge, about $39.30 on each $1,000 played over the long term. Over 100 spins at $0.20 that averages $0.79, and at $5 it averages $19.65. Hit frequency is 16.66%, roughly one paying spin in six.

Our catalogue labels the game High volatility, while the studio page calls it Extreme. The cap is worth $6,666.60 at a $0.20 stake and $166,665 at $5. The original Duck Hunters lists 96.05% with 30,000x, and Duck Hunters 2 lists 96% with 40,000x, so this entry sits between them on the ceiling with the best RTP of the three.

Is the party for you

Happy Hour rewards patience more than quick sessions. With only about one spin in six paying, much of the value depends on squares building up over a chain of drops or across a free spins round. Players who enjoy watching a board slowly charge up will find that satisfying; players who want frequent small wins may find the gaps long. The cheaper Day spins raise the starting multipliers, but they also raise what each spin costs.

Pros

  • 3x3 Bombs double multipliers and reveal new Wilds, xWays or Bombs
  • Square multipliers reach x8,192 and persist through free spins
  • Big Game Spins switch on all three upgrades
  • Highest RTP of the three Duck Hunters titles listed, at 96.07%

Cons

  • Hit frequency of only 16.66%
  • Volatility is High in our data but Extreme from the studio
  • Happy Hour Spins cost 3,000x the bet

Verdict

Duck Hunters: Happy Hour reshapes the series formula with a diamond board and a 3x3 Bomb that doubles multipliers and reveals helpful symbols. Squares can climb to x8,192, and the multipliers carry through the free spins. The 96.07% RTP sets a 3.93% house edge; volatility is High in our catalogue and Extreme by the studio. With one spin in six paying, set a stop point before starting.
