Buffalo King Megaways review
Buffalo King Megaways is the 2021 reworking of the studio's 2019 frontier slot. Six tumbling reels with changing heights give up to 200,704 ways to win, and the biggest potential is meant to sit in the free spins, where wilds arrive with multipliers that multiply each other. The rules set a hard cap of 5,000x the bet. With a 96.52% RTP and a bonus buy at 100x, this is a game to read carefully before a single spin.
Reels that change height
This is a Megaways slot, so the number of ways changes from spin to spin. Reels one and six can show up to seven symbols, and reels two to five up to eight. The top row of reels two to five spins on its own, from right to left. Put together, the rules give a maximum of 200,704 ways, which the studio rounds to over 200,000 in its summary.
Wins are counted from left to right on adjacent reels, with any number of matching symbols. A wild substitutes for most other symbols.
Tumbles, one after another
After every spin, winning combinations are paid and the winning symbols disappear. The rest fall to the bottom of the screen and new symbols drop in from above to fill the gaps. This repeats until a tumble produces no win. All the wins from one base spin are added to the balance only after the last tumble has finished.
Free spins and the multiplying wilds
The bonus symbol appears on all reels. Four or more anywhere start the free spins round, and the count sets the length. Four symbols give 12 spins, five give 17 and six give 22. The symbols pay in their own right too: four pay 5x the total bet, five pay 20x and six pay 100x.
The twist is in how wilds behave during the round. Every wild arrives with a random multiplier of 2x, 3x or 5x. When a wild takes part in a win, its value goes into a tumble multiplier indicator. All wild multipliers that land within one tumble sequence are multiplied by one another, and the accumulated figure is applied to the sequence's total win. Two or three wilds in a long chain can therefore grow the factor very quickly. Three or more bonus symbols during the round add another five spins, and the studio says there is no limit to retriggers.
Ante bet
The bet multiplier can be set to 20x, which is normal play, or 25x. At 25x the chance of landing the free spins naturally is doubled, with more bonus symbols on the reels. The paytable does not change, so every symbol pays as it does at 20x. That makes the cost of the ante bet 1.25x the normal stake.
Buy free spins
The round can be bought from the base game for 100x the current total bet. The purchase is switched off whenever the 25x ante bet is active. A bought round starts with 4, 5 or 6 bonus symbols chosen at random, which means 12, 17 or 22 free spins.
5,000x cap
The maximum win is limited to 5,000x the bet. If the total of a free spins round reaches that figure, the round ends immediately. Because multipliers can stack, this ceiling is the real limit on what the multiplying wilds can pay.
What the numbers say
The only RTP on record is 96.52%, a house edge of 3.48%, or about $34.80 lost per $1,000 wagered. In 100-spin blocks that averages $0.70 at $0.20 a spin, $3.48 at $1 and $17.40 at $5, which is $500 wagered.
The max win of 5,000x equals $1,000 at a $0.20 bet, $5,000 at $1 and $25,000 at $5. Volatility is not published, so how rarely the larger results arrive is not known from the data.
The original and the alternatives
One earlier game sits in the series: Buffalo King from 2019, listed at 96.06%. Among similar Megaways titles, 5 Lions Megaways, Madame Destiny Megaways and Power of Thor Megaways, all from 2021, share the 5,000x ceiling, with RTPs of 96.5%, 96.56% and 96.55%. Bandit Megaways (2025, 96.55%) has the same cap, while 5 Lions Megaways 2 lists 8,000x and Muertos Multiplier Megaways lists 10,000x at 96.03%.
Pros
- Up to 200,704 ways, with tumbles that continue until a spin stops winning
- Free spin wild multipliers of 2x, 3x and 5x multiply each other within a tumble sequence
- Free spins can be retriggered without a limit
- Ante bet at 25x doubles the natural chance of the free spins, and a 100x bonus buy exists
Cons
- Wins are capped at 5,000x the bet, which also ends a free spins round early
- No volatility rating in our catalogue
- The buy costs 100x the bet and cannot be combined with the ante bet
Verdict
Buffalo King Megaways is a tumbling Megaways game whose weight sits in the free spins, where wild multipliers of 2x, 3x and 5x are multiplied together. The 96.52% RTP gives a house edge of 3.48%, and the 5,000x cap is stated clearly in the rules. Volatility is not published. The 100x bonus buy and the 25x ante bet change how a stake is spent, so the free demo is a good way to see the pace first.
