5 Lions Megaways review
The defining moment in 5 Lions Megaways comes after the trigger, not before it. Land three or more bonus symbols and Pragmatic Play hands you a menu: many free spins with small wild multipliers, a handful of spins with big ones, or a mystery pick. Around that choice sits a 2021 Megaways engine with up to 117,649 ways, tumbling wins and base-game wilds that already carry multipliers of up to 40x.
Six reels, shifting heights
Each of the six reels can show up to 7 symbols, and the number changes every spin, which is why the ways count moves around. With every reel at full height the game reaches 117,649 ways. Wins pay for adjacent matches from the leftmost reel, and the wild, which lands only on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, substitutes for regular symbols.
Wins tumble. Paid symbols vanish, survivors fall and new symbols fill the gaps from above at the same sizes as the original spin. The chain continues until nothing new connects, and the total of the whole sequence is credited at the end.
Wild multiplier
When at least one wild is part of a winning combination in the base game or its tumbles, a random multiplier is applied to all winning combinations that use a wild. The base-game values are 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 8x, 10x, 15x, 30x and 40x, so a wild can just as easily add nothing extra as multiply a win by 40.
The free spins menu
Three or more bonus symbols anywhere start the round. They also pay on their own: 3x the total bet for three, 5x for four, 25x for five and 100x for six. Bonus symbols do not disappear during tumbles, so they stay put while a chain resolves.
Before the spins begin, you pick one of seven options. Six are fixed: 25 spins with 2x, 3x or 5x wild multipliers; 20 spins with 3x, 5x or 8x; 15 spins with 5x, 8x or 10x; 13 spins with 8x, 10x or 15x; 10 spins with 10x, 15x or 30x; and 6 spins with 15x, 30x or 40x. The seventh is a mystery choice whose details are cut off in our copy of the rules.
The trade-off is clear from the list. Longer rounds give more chances for wilds to land but cap the multiplier at 5x; the shortest round has the biggest multipliers and very little room for error. Which suits you depends on your appetite for swings, not on any option being better value, since the rules publish no separate RTP per option.
Ante bet and bonus buy
The standard bet uses a 20x multiplier. Switching to 25x raises the cost of each spin by a quarter and doubles the chance of triggering free spins naturally, by adding more bonus symbols to the reels. Symbol payouts stay as for the 20x setting, so the extra quarter goes towards the bonus odds only.
Alternatively, the round and its menu can be bought for 100x the current total bet. The buy is disabled while the 25x ante is on. Both options raise spending; neither lowers the house edge.
RTP, cap and cost
Only one RTP is listed, 96.5%, so the house edge is 3.5%. That works out at $35 per $1,000 of stakes over time, and on average $0.70, $3.50 and $17.50 for 100 spins at $0.20, $1 and $5.
Total wins are capped at 5,000x the bet: $1,000 at $0.20, $5,000 at $1 and $25,000 at $5. If a free spins round reaches the cap, it ends at once and any remaining spins are forfeited. No volatility rating is published.
The lion family and other Megaways
The original 5 Lions from 2018 and 5 Lions Megaways 2 from 2025 both list 96.5%, with the newer game raising the cap to 8,000x. Among 2021 Megaways releases with similar numbers, Madame Destiny Megaways lists 96.56% and Power of Thor Megaways 96.55%, each capped at 5,000x.
Pros
- Seven free spins options let you choose length against multiplier size
- Base-game wilds carry multipliers of up to 40x
- Up to 117,649 ways with tumbling wins
- Free official demo available
Cons
- A 5,000x cap ends the bonus early if reached
- The 25x ante and 100x buy both raise spending
- No volatility rating is published
Verdict
5 Lions Megaways stands out for its free spins menu, which trades round length against wild multipliers from 2x up to 40x. The base game already has multiplier wilds and tumbles across up to 117,649 ways. The RTP is 96.5%, volatility is unpublished and wins stop at 5,000x. Try the options in the free demo, then pick stakes you can afford to lose.
