Blood and Shadow review

Blood and Shadow follows Shadow Girl into an abandoned cathedral, where years of forbidden study have given her a ritual for eternal youth. Nolimit City turns that ritual into a progress bar. Wins feed a five-level Ritual Bar that strips out weak symbols as it climbs, and the top level opens Cursed Spins: a larger grid of high-paying symbols with the studio's xSplit mechanic switched on. The cap, The Pact is Sealed, is 6,666x the base bet.

Base game: 1024 ways and tumbles

The grid is five reels of four rows with 1024 ways, paying left to right, and the Ritual Bar runs along the bottom. Winning symbols are destroyed after each win, the rest tumble down and new ones fall in, so a spin continues until no new win appears.

Wilds land on reels 2 to 5. In the base game they act as normal substitutes; their sticky behaviour belongs to the two bonus modes, described below. Nolimit City publishes a hit frequency of 27.18%, a little better than one paying spin in four.

The Ritual Bar

Progress is the whole idea here. Each of the five levels needs more points than the last: 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80. Medium-paying symbols in a win add 1 point each, high-paying symbols add 2, and every scatter adds 10. When a level fills, the bar resets and any surplus carries into the next level.

Every level-up improves the reel set. The lowest-paying symbol is removed and medium symbols are converted into high-paying ones, so later spins in a sequence draw from a richer mix. The first four level-ups also award Candle Spins, and the fifth opens Cursed Spins.

Candle Spins

Each new Ritual Bar level up to level 4 awards 2 Candle Spins, and further level-ups during the round add 2 more each. Wilds now drop to the bottom of their reel and stay sticky until they form part of a win or a new bet is placed. The bar keeps progressing towards Cursed Spins.

Cursed Spins

Reaching level 5 removes the Ritual Bar and expands the grid to 5x5, filled only with high-paying symbols. Arriving through the bar gives 6 free spins; buying the mode gives 10. Wilds stay sticky as in Candle Spins, xSplit is active, and each scatter that lands adds 1 spin.

xSplit

Only in Cursed Spins. An xSplit splits either a row or a reel, doubling the symbols in that line and with them the active ways. Several can land on the same row, but not on the same reel.

The Pact is Sealed

If the total win reaches 6,666x the base bet, the round ends and that cap is paid. It is the ceiling for the whole game.

Bonus buys

The Nolimit Bonus menu sells entry to the features for between 55x and 500x the base bet. Our rules do not list the exact price of each option, only that range, so check the menu in the game before buying.

Baphomet Rite

Moves the Ritual Bar straight to level 3, awards 6 Candle Spins and replaces 3 low or medium symbols with 3 high-paying ones, so the round starts with a stronger reel set.

Two volatility labels

Here the published sources disagree. Our catalogue lists the volatility as Low, while the game's page text gives it an Extreme rating. Both are published; given a long progression to the best mode and a 6,666x cap, the Extreme description fits the design better, but neither figure should be read as more than a label.

The RTP is 96.13%, so the house edge is 3.87%, about $38.70 retained per $1,000 staked over a very long run. In session terms, 100 spins cost $0.77 at $0.20, $3.87 at $1 and $19.35 at $5. The 6,666x cap equals $1,333.20 at $0.20 and $6,666 at $1.

The sequel and neighbours

Blood and Shadow 2 lists 96.09%, High volatility and a much higher 16,161x ceiling. Among games with similar returns, Tomb of Akhenaten lists 96.09% with a 20,932x cap, Kiss My Chainsaw 96.1% with 10,900x and Space Donkey 96.07% with 14,649x. Next to them, this game's 6,666x is a modest limit. Our data lists no official free demo for it.

Pros

  • The Ritual Bar removes weak symbols and upgrades medium ones as it fills
  • Candle Spins arrive regularly through bar progress, with sticky wilds
  • Cursed Spins combine a 5x5 high-pays grid with xSplit
  • Published 27.18% hit frequency

Cons

  • Reaching Cursed Spins requires filling all five bar levels
  • The 6,666x cap is lower than its sequel and several similar games
  • Volatility is listed as Low in the catalogue but Extreme in page text
  • Exact bonus buy prices are not published

Verdict

Blood and Shadow is a progression slot: wins feed a Ritual Bar that cleans up the reel set, hands out Candle Spins and eventually opens xSplit Cursed Spins on a 5x5 grid. The RTP is 96.13%, the volatility is published as both Low and Extreme, and the 6,666x cap is modest. Budget for a 3.87% house edge and treat bonus buys of 55x to 500x with caution.
