Mammoth Gold Megaways review
Mammoth Gold Megaways, released by Pragmatic Play in 2023, takes the Megaways engine back to the Ice Age. The symbols include saber-toothed tigers, mammoths, wolves and bears, and the height of the reels changes on every spin. Wins tumble away, a wild multiplier meter can build during the sequence, and the free spins arrive with a random count that the studio says can be gambled upward. Here is how those parts fit together and what the numbers say.
A shifting board with 117,649 ways
The reels have no fixed height. Reels 1 and 6 can show up to 7 symbols. Reels 2 to 5 can show up to 6 symbols plus one more on a top row. That top strip spins on its own, from right to left, and it is the only place where a wild can land. With every reel at full height the game offers 117,649 ways to win.
Wins are paid for matching symbols on adjacent reels, counted from the left. The wild replaces base game symbols, which helps combinations form. Because the number of ways moves with the reel heights, a spin with short reels has far fewer routes to a win than one with tall reels.
Tumbles and the wild multiplier meter
Every win starts a chain. The sequence ends only when a tumble produces no new win, and the wins from the whole chain reach the balance after the last tumble has played.
Tumble Feature
After a spin, winning combinations are paid and the winning symbols vanish. The remaining symbols fall to the bottom and new ones drop in from above, at the same size as the opening result. The process repeats until nothing new wins, so one paid spin can contain several results.
Wild multiplier
Each wild that lands carries a random x2 or x3. That value applies to the current tumble and every later one, and it is stored in a meter. When more wilds land during the same chain, the stored total is multiplied by the new values rather than added to them. The meter resets to x1 once the chain is over.
Free spins: a random count and an optional gamble
Three or more bonus symbols anywhere on the reels start the round, but the number of spins is drawn at random from a list. Six symbols draw from 8, 10, 12 or 14. Five draw from 7, 8, 10, 12 or 14. Four draw from 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 or 14, and three draw from 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 or 14. A larger trigger removes the smaller counts from the pool, but the draw stays random.
The studio adds that a gamble mechanic can raise the number of spins before the round begins. During the round, a multiplier grows as the bonus goes on, and multipliers held by wilds can add to it. The pack gives no step size and no odds for the gamble, so check both in the demo before relying on them.
Buy Free Spins
The round can be bought from the base game for 100x the current total bet. When it is bought, 3, 4, 5 or 6 bonus symbols hit at random. At a $1 bet that is $100 for access to the feature, and at a $5 bet it is $500. It is a paid shortcut, not a cheaper way to reach the same outcome.
What the numbers say
The RTP is 96.03%, in line with the 96.03% printed in the official rules, which gives a house edge of 3.97%. Over a long run that is about $39.70 lost for every $1,000 wagered.
A 100-spin session at $0.20 costs $0.79 on average, at $1 it costs $3.97 and at $5 it costs $19.85. The maximum win is 10,000x the bet, which is $2,000 at a $0.20 bet, $10,000 at $1 and $50,000 at $5. No volatility label is published for this game, and no hit frequency is listed, so those are unknown.
Similar Megaways games
Muertos Multiplier Megaways from 2022 shares both the 96.03% RTP and the 10,000x cap. Pompeii Megareels Megaways (2024) lists 96% with the same cap, and Barnyard Megahays Megaways (2024) lists 96.5% with 10,000x. Ancient Island Megaways (2025) is at 96.55%. If you want a lower ceiling, 5 Lions Megaways 2 (2025) caps at 8,000x and 5 Frozen Charms Megaways (2023) at 5,000x, both at 96.5%.
Pros
- Up to 117,649 ways with tumbles, so one paid spin can chain several wins
- Wild multipliers of x2 or x3 are multiplied together inside a tumble chain
- The official 10,000x cap is stated clearly in the rules
- Free official demo available
Cons
- The free spin count is random, from as few as 5 spins to as many as 14
- No volatility label or hit frequency is published
- Buying the free spins costs 100x the bet
Verdict
Mammoth Gold Megaways pairs a variable-height board with tumbles and a wild multiplier that compounds inside a chain. The 96.03% RTP means a 3.97% house edge, and the volatility is not published, so use the free demo to judge the swings before choosing a bet. The 10,000x ceiling is a distant outcome, not a target. Treat any session as paid entertainment with a known average cost.
