Blood Diamond review

Nolimit City sets this slot in a desert diamond mine and treats the illicit trade in a grim tone. The grid has a 4-4-4-4-4 layout with tall character symbols, and the main engine is the xNudge Wild, which steps into view and grows with every step. Two further tricks, chained reels and a random wild drop, shape the base game. The bonus rounds are named for escalating levels of menace, but the useful way to read them is as three upgrade tiers.

1,024 ways and stacked characters

The studio's description speaks of four reels and four rows, while the official layout, 4-4-4-4-4, shows five reels of four rows. The 1,024 ways it advertises match the second reading. Wins run left to right.

Character symbols can be stacked up to four high. A stacked symbol counts for as many positions as it covers, so a tall character in the right place adds a lot of ways.

xNudge Wilds, chains and Desire

These three systems drive the base game, and two of them can be bought directly.

xNudge Wild

A stacked wild that always nudges up or down until it is fully visible. Each step adds 1 to its multiplier, and when several connect their multipliers are added, then used as a win multiplier.

Chained Reels

At random, two or more reels link so the same symbols land next to each other across the chained reels. In the free spins at least two reels are chained on every spin.

xNudge Desire

A random base game feature that adds between one and five xNudge Wilds to the grid. If one lands on a chained reel, every chained reel gets an xNudge Wild.

Oppression, Domination, Enslavement

Bonus and Big Bonus symbols start the free spins. Three Bonus symbols open Oppression Spins, four open Domination Spins and five open Enslavement Spins. All three give five spins. What changes is the number of Big Bonus upgrades you begin with: one, two or three.

Upgrades improve the round in several ways. The studio lists extra spins, a bigger multiplier, more chained reels, xNudge Desire, a nudge on every spin and a higher max win. Up to three Big Bonus symbols can land on a single free spin, so a round can improve as it goes. Multipliers from xNudge and Big Bonus are persistent for the whole round, which is where the large results are built. The round ends after the last spin or at the 14,780x cap, which the game calls The Coronation.

The four purchase options

Everything below is paid before the spin. The first is the game's ante-style option, and each step up costs far more per spin.

xBet

Costs 3x the bet and puts a Bonus symbol on reel one or two.

Chained Reels xBet

Costs 7x the bet and makes sure the chained reels feature is on.

xNudge Booster

Costs 35x the bet and adds an xNudge Wild.

xNudge Desire

Costs 500x the bet and triggers the Desire feature.

The maths

Blood Diamond has one RTP on record, 96.14%, a house edge of 3.86%, which is about $38.60 per $1,000 wagered. Hit frequency is 20.98% and the volatility is Very high.

At $0.20, 100 spins cost $0.77 on average, at $1 they cost $3.86, and at $5, or $500 wagered, $19.30. The max win of 14,780x equals $2,956 at $0.20, $14,780 at $1 and $73,900 at $5. Other Very high games with similar numbers are Beheaded at 96.03% and 15,950x, Tombstone: No Mercy at 96.05% and 16,480x, and Dead, Dead Or Deader at 96.09% and 19,349x.

Pros

  • xNudge Wild multipliers grow with every step and add together
  • Persistent multipliers and upgrades in all three bonus tiers
  • Chained reels create matching symbols side by side
  • Four purchase options at different prices

Cons

  • Very high volatility: long stretches without a large win are likely
  • Max win of 14,780x is below several similar Very high games
  • The 500x purchase option is expensive per spin
  • No official free demo is listed in our catalogue

Verdict

Blood Diamond is a Very high volatility slot built on nudging wilds and chained reels, with three bonus tiers that differ only in how many upgrades they start with. The 96.14% RTP and 3.86% house edge look ordinary next to similar Very high games, while the 14,780x cap is lower than most of them. It is paid entertainment with uneven results, so set a limit before the first spin.
