Archangels: Salvation review
Good against evil, angels against demons: the setting of Archangels: Salvation is old, but the layout is the point. NetEnt describes it as the first game in its history with 100 bet lines, and it marks off two hot spot areas on the board. A wild that lands in the top zone sets off the Heaven feature, and one in the bottom zone sets off Hell. It was released in 2018, is rated Medium and has a 644x max win.
Two zones, two wild features
The first hot spot is the top two rows of the playing area. The second is the bottom two. Each has its own wild feature: the top zone runs the Heaven Feature and the bottom zone the Hell Feature. In the free spins, both zones grow to three rows.
The studio lists the grid as 6x12 reels and rows and a stake range of €0.40 to €200.00. The game has 100 bet lines, which is why the hot spots are defined as bands of rows.
How the Heaven and Hell features run
The trigger is a 2x2 Wild. If any part of it lands in a hot spot, the matching feature is activated, once for each reel position the Wild occupies. A 2x2 Wild that lands completely inside the zone therefore activates the feature four times.
The feature can be triggered again if a stack of Wild symbols, or a single Wild, lands in the zone. For each Wild in the zone, the game generates either one stack of Wilds or four singleton Wilds. Two rules limit the chain. The same feature cannot activate twice in a row, and only one feature can be active at a time, so Heaven and Hell take turns.
Heaven Feature
It starts when a 2x2 Wild lands fully or partly in the top hot spot. A partial landing generates 2 stacks of Wild symbols. A full landing generates 4 stacks. The studio text we have is cut off after that point, so we leave the rest of its details out.
Hell Feature
It belongs to the bottom hot spot and follows the same activation rule as Heaven, with the same limits on repeat activation. The studio's text on its exact output is not available to us. What is stated is that only two kinds of Wild can be on the reels during the features: singletons and stacks.
When the features stop
A feature chain ends when no new Wild lands in a hot spot, or when a Wild has no free position left on the reels. The win from the Wild Features is evaluated and paid after the features have finished, and it is added to any bet line wins from the same round.
The maths
Archangels: Salvation has one RTP, 96.08%, so the house edge is 3.92% and $1,000 wagered costs $39.20 on average. The hit frequency is 17%, roughly one spin in six. Costs per 100 spins are $0.78 at $0.20, $3.92 at $1 and $19.60 at $5.
The 644x max win is $128.80 at $0.20, $644 at $1 and $3,220 at $5. The ceiling is set by the studio, and the wild features do not change it.
Alongside Temple of Nudges and Elements
Other Medium games with a similar profile include Temple of Nudges at 96.03% and 600x, Elements: The Awakening at 96.02% and 800x and Lights at 96.1% and 600x. Cash Noire lists 96.06% and 1,000x, Wild - O - Tron 3000 96.01% and 500x, and Cornelius from 2022 96.04% and 1,000x.
Pros
- 100 bet lines with two hot spot zones that each run their own Wild Feature
- A single 2x2 Wild can activate a feature up to four times
- Hot spots grow from two rows to three in the free spins
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Max win is 644x the bet, below the 1,000x of Cash Noire and Cornelius
- A 17% hit frequency means many spins return nothing
Verdict
Archangels: Salvation is all about the hot spots. A 2x2 Wild in the top or bottom zone sets off Heaven or Hell, the features alternate and the chain pays at the end. The 96.08% RTP and Medium volatility sit alongside a 644x ceiling, which is the main limit on the top prize. The house edge is 3.92%. The free demo is the easiest way to see how the zones behave before spending anything.
