Asgardian Stones review

Asgardian Stones puts stone giants on a small grid and lets them fall. NetEnt released it in 2018 as a 5-reel, 3-row, 20-line slot where symbols drop into place instead of spinning, and where oversized symbols can land and flatten the rows below them. Add a Bonus Wheel that is a block of symbols in its own right, and the result is a Medium volatility game with a 1,000x ceiling and a 96.31% RTP.

Avalanches on a 5x3 grid

Symbols fall into position instead of spinning. A winning bet line starts an avalanche: the symbols in the win explode and disappear, and a fresh set drops into the gaps. The grid is small, with 20 lines, which keeps each result easy to read.

Colossal symbols and the crush

Every symbol in the main game and in the free spins can appear in a colossal version, except the wild in the main game. A colossal symbol is a block of 2x2 or 3x3 symbols and may be shown fully or partly, depending on how the reel lands. During an avalanche one may fall in, and any space left around it is filled with regular symbols. Two or more colossal symbols can never be visible at the same time.

After the first avalanche, the Colossal Crush can switch on, in both the main game and the free spins. A colossal symbol must always have symbols in every position directly underneath it. When a new one falls, it may randomly crush extra rows beneath it. If empty positions are left under it after a previous win, it falls and crushes the row underneath, and this repeats until it reaches the bottom or there is nothing empty below.

Colossal Crush

Available after the first avalanche in the main game and the free spins. A falling colossal symbol can crush the rows of symbols under it, and it keeps falling through any empty positions until it sits at the bottom.

The Bonus Wheel

The Bonus Wheel is a 3x3 symbol block that can land on the last three reels only, in the main game and in the free spins. It may be fully or partly visible. It is evaluated once all avalanches and win checks are over. Coin wins, free spins or both can come from it.

Unlike normal symbols, the wheel is not removed after its win is awarded, so no avalanche follows its evaluation. The studio text we hold stops there, and it does not say how the free spins are triggered or retriggered. We do not guess at those details.

The numbers

One RTP is on record, 96.31%, a house edge of 3.69%. That is about $36.90 lost per $1,000 wagered over a long run. A 100-spin session costs $0.74 on average at $0.20, $3.69 at $1 and $18.45 at $5.

The max win is 1,000x the bet: $200 at $0.20, $1,000 at $1 and $5,000 at $5. The studio lists a 20.1% hit frequency, so about one spin in five pays. Volatility is Medium, and bets run from €0.20 to €200.00.

Medium volatility alternatives

Theme Park: Tickets of Fortune shows 96.52% with the same 1,000x max win. Cash Noire lists 96.06% and 1,000x, and Cornelius from 2022 lists 96.04% and 1,000x. Scruffy Duck reaches 1,200x at 96.38%, Lucky Angler: A Snowy Catch 900x at 96.41%, and Fairytale Legends: Red Riding Hood 800x at 96.33%. All are rated Medium.

Pros

  • Colossal symbols of 2x2 or 3x3 add size to an otherwise small 5x3 grid
  • Colossal Crush can flatten extra rows after the first avalanche
  • Bonus Wheel can award coins, free spins or both
  • Medium volatility with a 96.31% RTP

Cons

  • Max win of 1,000x is modest
  • A 20.1% hit frequency means about four in five spins pay nothing
  • Free spins trigger rules are not in the studio text we hold

Verdict

Asgardian Stones is a compact game with one visual hook: large symbols that fall and crush. The 96.31% RTP gives a 3.69% house edge, about $36.90 per $1,000, and the Medium volatility sits with a 1,000x ceiling, so it is closer to a steady-paced slot than a long-shot one. It suits players who prefer smaller, more regular swings. Even so, it costs money on average, so decide a budget before playing.
