Butterfly Staxx review
Butterfly Staxx is a quiet game by design. NetEnt released it in June 2017 with a nature theme, 40 lines and a Low volatility rating, and its two features share one rule: butterflies that land drift to the left side of their row and stay there. Respins add more butterflies, the free spins replace every symbol with cocoons, and the ceiling is a modest 300x. The 96.8% RTP is the figure that stands out.
Layout and the leftward flight
The reels form a 5x4 grid with 40 bet lines, and stakes run from €0.20 to €400 according to the studio page. Wilds can show up anywhere in the main game and during respins, standing in for every symbol except the scatter. When a wild could complete more than one combination on a line, it pays the highest one the paytable allows.
The idea that ties the game together is movement. Whenever a butterfly is collected by a feature, it flies to the leftmost free position in its own row. Lines are read from the left, so packing butterflies on that side means they start combinations rather than sitting idle on the right.
The two features
Both features rely on butterflies building up on the left, but they start in different ways and cannot run at the same time.
ReSpins
Triggered when a stack of butterflies covers an entire reel. Line wins from the triggering spin are paid first. The butterflies then fly left along their rows and hold their places. Every new visible butterfly also flies left and awards one more respin; butterflies landing behind others do not count. When none land, the respins end and line wins are paid.
Butterfly Spins
Three or more scatters anywhere in the main game start this free spins round. Only Cocoon symbols can land, and each is either dormant or active. Active cocoons hatch into butterflies, fly to the left of their row and remain until the end. The round cannot be retriggered and is played at the stake that started it.
Inside the Butterfly Spins
The free spins work differently from most rounds because ordinary symbols disappear. With only cocoons on the reels, the value of the round depends on how many of them wake up and how quickly the left side of the board fills with butterflies. Line wins are added to the total as the butterflies settle, and the final sum is added to the win of the spin that triggered the round.
The studio page does not state how many Butterfly Spins are awarded, and additional spins cannot be won inside the round, so its length is fixed once it begins.
What the figures say
The single listed RTP of 96.8% gives a house edge of 3.2%, or about $32 per $1,000 wagered over a long period. In shorter terms, 100 spins average a cost of $0.64 at $0.20, $3.20 at $1 and $16 at $5.
The Low volatility label and the 300x cap belong together. The top result is $60 at a $0.20 stake, $300 at $1 and $1,500 at $5, so this is not a game built for one life-changing spin. NetEnt's hit frequency of 24% means about one spin in four pays; the low rating suggests the returns are spread more evenly than in a high-volatility design, though short sessions still vary.
The sequel and low-volatility neighbours
Butterfly Staxx 2 is the follow-up in the catalogue, listed at 96.35% with Medium volatility and the same 300x cap, so it trades some return for a slightly livelier rating. Other games with similar figures include Jimi Hendrix at 96.9% and 400x, Hook's Heroes at 96.82% and 500x, and Coins of Egypt at 96.97% and 200x, all rated Low.
Pros
- A 96.8% RTP, a house edge of only 3.2%
- Low volatility suits small, steady budgets
- Butterflies gather on the left, where lines begin
- Wilds also appear during respins
Cons
- The 300x ceiling limits the top result to $300 at a $1 bet
- Butterfly Spins cannot be retriggered
- The studio does not state how many Butterfly Spins are awarded
Verdict
Butterfly Staxx is a gentle, consistent design: two features built on butterflies that fly to the left and stay, a Low volatility rating, and a 96.8% RTP that keeps the house edge at 3.2%. The 300x ceiling rules it out for anyone chasing large multiples, but it suits relaxed sessions at modest stakes. Treat it as paid entertainment and keep each session within a set budget.
