Elements: The Awakening review

Elements: The Awakening is set in a distant galaxy where fire, water, air and earth collide, and its bonus is not chosen from a menu. It is earned. Winning symbols fall away and are replaced, a meter counts the successive falls, and after four in a row one of four Storm modes begins. Each mode gives 10 free falls with a different wild behaviour. It is rated Medium, with a 96.02% RTP and an 800x ceiling.

Falls, a meter and a leading element

The game sits on five reels and three rows with up to 20 lines. NetEnt's studio page lists the layout and a stake range of €0.20 to €100.00. It lists a release date in 2012.

The Avalanche meter goes up by one for each successive fall, and it stops at 4. After four successive Avalanches, one of the four Free Falls Storm modes is triggered. The colour of the meter follows the leading element of the current round, and that leading element decides which Storm mode you enter.

A second display, the Energy Meter, is shown on the Play button in the main game. It has four sections that fill with energy from the leading element, and it tells the player which Storm mode they will enter if Free Falls is won.

The four Storm modes

Every Storm mode gives 10 free falls, and every mode includes Wild symbol substitutions. What differs is what the Wilds do. The mode you enter follows the leading element of the round that triggers the bonus.

Fire Storm

Fire Storm Wilds spread across the columns. Each Wild turns any two adjacent symbols into additional Wilds, so a single landing can grow the number of wilds on the board quickly.

Air Storm

Two Wild symbols fall at random onto the columns from the start of the free falls. In this mode the Wilds move position, but they stay on the columns for the whole Air Storm round, so there are always wilds in play.

Earth Storm

Earth Storm Wilds are indestructible for a maximum of 3 falls when they complete winning bet lines. That allows the same wild to take part in more than one win.

Water Storm

Water Storm Wilds are Expanding Wilds. They expand vertically to cover the entire column and turn the symbols there into Wild symbols.

Cost of play

The RTP is 96.02%, which gives a house edge of 3.98% and an average cost of $39.80 per $1,000 wagered. The hit frequency is 29%. At $0.20 a stake, 100 spins cost $0.80 on average, at $1 they cost $3.98 and at $5 they cost $19.90.

The max win is 800x the bet, or $160 at $0.20, $800 at $1 and $4,000 at $5.

Comparable Medium slots

Cornelius (2022) and Cash Noire both list 1,000x, at 96.04% and 96.06%. Archangels: Salvation shows 96.08% and 644x, Temple of Nudges 96.03% and 600x, and Lights 96.1% and 600x. Fairytale Legends: Red Riding Hood offers the same 800x at 96.33%.

Pros

  • A visible meter and Energy Meter show how close you are to a Storm mode
  • Four distinct free falls modes, each with 10 free falls
  • Earth Storm Wilds survive up to 3 falls in winning lines
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • The Storm modes need four successive falls, so they cannot be reached on demand
  • Max win is 800x the bet, below some similar Medium games

Verdict

Elements: The Awakening links its bonus to the main game. Four falls in a row open one of four Storm modes, each with 10 free falls and its own wild rule. The 96.02% RTP, 3.98% house edge and Medium rating are plain, and the 800x ceiling keeps it modest. If you like to see a bonus build step by step, it is clear to follow, and the free demo shows how often the meter gets to four.
