5 Lions Dance review

This 2020 release is a four-row, five-reel slot with 1,024 ways to win, and the studio builds it around two ideas. In one, the lions dance: the two leftmost reels merge into one tall reel that holds only prizes. In the other, the lion head symbols change into new random ones during the free spins and pay a second time. No max win is published, which is an important gap, and the rules PDF also lists a different RTP from the catalogue.

Ways to win and the cast of symbols

Wins are formed from left to right on adjacent reels, over 1,024 ways. The Wild appears on reels two to five and substitutes for most symbols. Separate Bonus symbols appear on reels one to three. Three of them pay 1x the total bet and also start the free spins, so even the trigger carries a small payment.

The Lion Reel symbol is a different matter. It lands only on reels three, four and five, and it belongs to the first of the two features.

The Lion Reel bonus

Three Lion Reel symbols start the bonus. At that moment, reels one and two become a single, fully expanded reel containing only direct money awards, written as multiples of the total bet. The reel spins once and lands on a random value.

The possible values are 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 75x, 100x, 150x and 200x. Because it is one spin of one reel, the outcome is a single prize. It is a one-off prize, separate from the free spins.

Free spins with transforming lions

Three Bonus symbols award 10 free spins. During the round, every lion head symbol that lands is paid first. Then each of them changes into another random lion head symbol and pays again, using the paytable of its new identity. A single spin can therefore pay twice from the same positions.

Three more Bonus symbols during the round give 10 more spins, and the studio notes there is no limit on retriggers. Special reels are in play during the feature, but the text we hold does not describe how they differ from the base reels.

The RTP conflict and the missing max win

Our catalogue lists an RTP of 96.5%, a house edge of 3.5%, or about $35 lost per $1,000 wagered. The studio's rules PDF, however, states a theoretical RTP of 94.5%. We cannot tell which figure applies on a given site, so check the game's own information screen. The max win is not published, and neither is a volatility label.

On the catalogue figure, 100 spins cost $0.70 on average at a $0.20 bet, $3.50 at $1 and $17.50 at $5, which means $500 wagered.

The original and other 2020 games

The original 5 Lions from 2018 lists 96.5%. Among other 2020 releases, Christmas Carol Megaways lists 96.5% with a 20,000x cap, Drago - Jewels of Fortune lists 96.5% with 48,000x, and Aztec Bonanza lists 96.53% with 19,440x. Those caps are much higher than anything the Lion Reel can award.

Pros

  • 1,024 ways to win on a 4x5 grid
  • Lion Reel prizes from 5x to 200x the total bet
  • Transforming lion heads pay a second time in the free spins
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • The rules PDF gives 94.5% against 96.5% in the catalogue
  • No max win or volatility label is published
  • The Lion Reel bonus is a single spin with one prize

Verdict

5 Lions Dance is easy to follow: 1,024 ways, a one-spin prize reel and free spins in which lions transform and pay again. The weak point is the data. The catalogue says 96.5% RTP, a 3.5% house edge, while the rules PDF says 94.5%, and no max win or volatility is published. Use the free demo to judge the pace, and treat it as paid entertainment whichever figure applies.
