Release the Kraken 2 review
Release the Kraken 2 is the sequel to a 2020 ocean slot, and Pragmatic Play moved it to a 5x4 grid with 40 paylines. The base game can fire random features on any spin, wild respins keep wilds on the board, and the free spins can be reached in several ways: scatters, a higher ante bet or one of two buy options. The studio also describes a gamble mechanic in the bonus that can add spins.
Random features in the base game
On any spin there is a chance that one of several random features hits. The one our rules extract describes in full is the Wild Respin. If four or more wilds land, the game pays the win and then goes into a free respin mode. The wilds stay on the screen and move to random positions while the rest of the symbols respin. All winning combinations are paid after each respin, and if more wilds land after a respin, one more respin is awarded.
The extract is cut off before the end of that sequence and before the other random features. The studio's summary points to shifting stacked wilds and win spins as part of the same group, but does not detail them, so we leave them at that.
Bonus symbols and free spins
The bonus symbol appears on all reels, and three or more of them trigger the free spins feature. The studio describes the bonus round as one that can grant extra spins through a gamble mechanic, and as having an increasing multiplier. The rules text we have does not give the number of spins or the multiplier steps, so those details are not covered here.
Ante bet and two ways to buy
Three paths lead into the bonus without waiting for scatters to line up, and each changes the price of a spin or the cost of a purchase.
Ante bet
The bet multiplier can be set to 25x instead of the normal 20x. At 25x the chance of winning the free spins naturally is higher, and the Buy Free Spins feature is switched off. The stake rises by a quarter.
Standard Free Spins
Costs 100x the total bet and starts the round with 3 to 5 bonus symbols, decided at random.
VIP Free Spins
Costs 250x the total bet and starts the round with 5 bonus symbols.
Three RTP figures in the rules
Our catalogue lists 96.5%, a house edge of 3.5% and about $35 lost per $1,000 wagered. The rules text is more complicated. It gives a theoretical RTP of 96.03%, and it lists 96.01% with the ante bet, 96.03% with Standard Free Spins and 96.05% with VIP Free Spins. These are other published figures that an operator may run, and they differ slightly from the catalogue headline.
The maximum win is capped at 5,000x the bet. That is $1,000 at a $0.20 bet, $5,000 at $1 and $25,000 at $5. On the 96.5% version, 100 spins at $0.20 cost about $0.70, at $1 about $3.50, and at $5 (a $500 total) about $17.50. Volatility is not published.
The first game and the neighbours
The original Release the Kraken is in the catalogue at 96.5%, from 2020. Games with similar numbers include Happy Hooves at 96.5% and 5,000x, Gold Party at 96.5% and 5,163x, Hot to Burn Extreme at 96.65% and 5,000x, and Big Bass Splash at 96.71% and 5,000x, all from 2022.
Pros
- Wild Respin keeps wilds on the screen and awards extra respins
- Two buy options at 100x and 250x, plus an optional ante bet
- Max win of 5,000x the bet
- Free official demo available
Cons
- The rules list several RTP figures from 96.01% to 96.05% besides the 96.5% headline
- No volatility rating is published
- Ante bet and bonus buy cannot be used together
Verdict
Release the Kraken 2 mixes random base game features with a flexible route to the bonus. The headline RTP is 96.5%, with 96.01% to 96.05% in the official rules, a house edge of 3.5% on the headline version, and volatility is not published. The cap is 5,000x. It is a feature-heavy 40-payline slot, and the free demo is the sensible place to learn how the wild respins behave.
