Return of the Dead review
Return of the Dead is a book slot in the plainest sense. Pragmatic Play's 2020 release puts an explorer inside a pyramid on a 5x3 grid with 10 paylines, and one mysterious book symbol does three jobs: wild, scatter and key to the bonus. The free spins hinge on a single randomly chosen symbol that can stretch across whole reels, and they can be extended with no upper limit on retriggers.
Ten lines and one key symbol
With 10 paylines across five reels and three rows, the base game is easy to read. Wins are counted from the leftmost reel to the right along adjacent positions.
The book is the only special symbol in the rules. As a wild it replaces every other symbol and also forms its own line wins from the wild paytable. As a scatter it pays anywhere on the screen as a multiple of the total bet: 2x for three, 20x for four and 200x for five. Three or more of them also open the free spins, so the same landing can pay twice over.
The free spins
Ten free spins are awarded when the round starts. Before the first spin the game picks one symbol at random to act as the special expanding symbol, and that choice holds for the whole round, including any extensions.
Special expanding symbol
Once regular line wins on a free spin are paid, the chosen symbol grows vertically to fill all three rows of each reel it sits on. It then pays from its own paytable on all reels, even if those reels are not next to each other. It only expands when enough copies are on screen to form a win.
Unlimited retriggers
Landing three or more book symbols during the round awards 10 more free spins, still with the same special symbol. The rules set no limit on the number of retriggers, so a round can keep going as long as books keep arriving.
Why the chosen symbol matters so much
Because the expanding symbol pays on non-adjacent reels, it ignores the usual left-to-right rule. Two or three copies spread across the grid can each fill a reel and pay across every line at once. That is where the big results come from, and it also explains why rounds differ so much: a premium symbol and a low card produce very different outcomes from the same number of expansions.
Retriggers keep the same symbol, so a good pick can pay over many more spins, and a weak pick stays weak. Nothing in the base game builds up towards the bonus; each spin is independent.
There is also no bonus buy and no ante option in the rules. The only route into the pyramid is landing three books naturally, so the cost of reaching the feature is simply the cost of the base spins in between. That keeps the pricing transparent, but it also means there is no shortcut to the round.
Return, cost and ceiling
The catalogue and the rules agree on one RTP: 96.71%, a house edge of 3.29%. Over the long run that is about $32.90 per $1,000 wagered. As a session guide, 100 spins at $0.20 cost $0.66 on average, 100 at $1 cost $3.29 and 100 at $5 cost $16.45.
Wins are limited to 20,000x the bet: $4,000 at $0.20 and $20,000 at $1. No volatility rating is published. With only 10 lines and most of the potential tied to the expanding symbol, expect stretches of quiet base play between bonuses; that is a reading of the design rather than a published statistic.
Matching numbers
There is no sequel in our catalogue. Book of Kingdoms from the same year lists 96.69% and the same 20,000x cap, while Dragon Hot Hold and Spin and Hot to Burn Hold and Spin, both from 2021, sit at 96.7%. Might of Ra from 2022 lists 96.49% with a 22,500x ceiling.
The game suits players who like a short rulebook and do not mind waiting for one feature to deliver. The free official demo lets you see how often the books land before committing money.
Pros
- Book symbol pays as a scatter up to 200x the total bet
- Expanding symbol pays on all reels, adjacent or not
- Free spins can be retriggered without limit
- 96.71% RTP confirmed by the official rules
Cons
- Only 10 paylines, so most of the value sits in the bonus
- Free spin results depend heavily on which symbol is picked
- No published volatility rating
Verdict
Return of the Dead offers a clean book formula: one symbol that is wild and scatter, 10 free spins with a random expanding symbol, and unlimited retriggers. The 96.71% RTP is confirmed by the rules, the volatility is not published, and the 20,000x cap is a rare outcome. With a 3.29% house edge it is paid entertainment, and the free demo is the sensible place to start.
