Release the Kraken review

Under the sea, the treasure sits right beside the kraken. Pragmatic Play's 2020 slot sets its reels in the deep ocean and leans on two features: Kraken Locking Wilds, where picks from treasure chests decide whether the reels keep spinning, and free spins with roaming wilds and a multiplier that grows with every wild. Random features can also appear on any spin. The RTP is 96.5%.

The grid and the lines

Wins pay along paylines from left to right. The official rules sheet counts 40 paylines, while the studio's short page description mentions a 4x5 layout with 20 lines; we follow the rules sheet for the line count. The wild substitutes for the regular symbols and is present on all reels.

Bonus symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5 are what open the bonus features. The rules text in our source is not clear about the exact combination needed, so we do not state one.

The features beneath the waves

Two named features define the game, and one of them can be skipped to directly.

Kraken Locking Wilds

Once this feature starts, the reels keep spinning while a series of choices appears: pick one of three chests. Each chest awards More Wilds, Continue Spinning, All Wins x2 and Collect, More Wilds and Collect, or plain Collect. A Collect result ends the sequence, and all winning combinations are paid at the end.

Free Spins

The round starts with a 1x win multiplier. Every wild that hits raises the multiplier for all remaining free spins by 1x, up to a maximum of 10x. Wilds that have landed stay on screen and move to a random position on every spin. Special reels are used, and the round cannot be retriggered.

Buy Free Spins

The free spins can be bought from the base game for 100x the current total bet. Since the round cannot be retriggered, a purchase buys exactly one run of the feature.

Why the free spins reward patience

Two effects build at once inside the bonus. The multiplier only ever climbs, so wins late in the round are worth more than early ones. The wilds never leave, so the number of roaming wilds on screen also grows. A round in which wilds arrive early gets both effects working for longer.

The reverse is also true. If few wilds land, the multiplier stays near 1x and the board holds few substitutes, and with no retrigger available there is no second chance within the round.

Return, cost and ceiling

The rules give a theoretical RTP of 96.5%, which is the only version in our catalogue. With a house edge of 3.5%, long-run play costs about $35 per $1,000 wagered.

Expected costs for 100 spins are $0.70 at a $0.20 bet, $3.50 at $1 and $17.50 at $5. The studio publishes no volatility rating or max win for this title in our data. The 100x buy price and a growing multiplier capped at 10x point to a bonus with a wide spread of results.

Sequels and similar catches

Release the Kraken 2 from 2022 keeps the 96.5% RTP and lists a 5,000x cap. Release the Kraken Megaways from 2024 lists 96.4% with a 10,000x cap.

From the same year, Mysterious Egypt and John Hunter and the book of Tut share the 96.5% RTP, the first of them rated High. Day of Dead from 2021 lists 96.49% with a 4,500x ceiling, and Wild Booster lists 96.47% with 5,000x.

Who should dive in

The game suits players who like features with visible progress: a multiplier counter that only goes up, and a chest sequence where each pick decides whether the reels carry on. Random features on any spin add some variety to the base game. Anyone weighing the 100x buy should remember that it purchases a single, non-retriggering round whose outcome depends heavily on how early the wilds arrive.

Pros

  • Free spin multiplier grows by 1x per wild, up to 10x
  • Wilds stay for the whole round and move every spin
  • Chest picks keep Kraken Locking Wilds spinning
  • 96.5% RTP and a free official demo

Cons

  • Free spins cannot be retriggered
  • No volatility rating or max win published
  • The page and the rules sheet disagree on the number of paylines

Verdict

Release the Kraken offers two distinct features: chest picks that extend Kraken Locking Wilds, and free spins where every wild raises a multiplier up to 10x and stays on screen. The RTP is 96.5%, but no volatility or max win is published and the bonus cannot retrigger. Try the free demo, then play within a set limit, keeping the 3.5% house edge in mind.
