Pompeii Megareels Megaways review
Pragmatic Play stages this 2024 release under a volcano. Vesuvius sits in the background, lava fills the landscape and the symbols include armour, shields and gold medallions. The reel layout changes from spin to spin, and wins tumble away to make room for fresh symbols. In the free spins, the number of symbols that vanish in a tumble becomes the multiplier, which is the idea the whole game is built around.
Six reels and up to 117,649 ways
Each of the six reels can show up to 7 symbols, which gives a top figure of 117,649 ways to win. The count changes with every spin, as in other Megaways games. Wins are made by landing three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels, counted left to right from the first reel.
Wild symbols appear on reels 2 to 6 and replace every symbol except the scatter. The scatter shows up only in the base game, on all reels. It matters for one thing: starting the free spins.
Tumbles that can grow the reels
After each spin the game pays the winning combinations and removes the winning symbols. The rest fall to the bottom, and new symbols drop in from above. This continues until a tumble produces no new win, and all wins are added together.
There is a twist. On reels that contained at least one winning symbol, the number of symbols after a tumble can randomly rise. So a winning tumble can make the next layout larger, with more ways to win than the one before.
Tumble Feature
Winning symbols disappear, the rest fall down and new symbols fill the gaps. A reel that held a winner can come back with more symbols than before, up to the 7-symbol limit. The sequence stops when no new win appears.
Free spins: the exploding-symbol multiplier
Four, five, or six or more scatters award 15, 20 or 25 free spins. The rules say the round cannot be retriggered and that special reels are used. In the round, every win is multiplied by the total number of symbols that exploded in the current tumble.
The studio's page words this slightly differently, saying each win is multiplied by the number of winning symbols on screen. Both point the same way: bigger clusters of disappearing symbols give a bigger multiplier. The reel growth in the tumble feature feeds this, because a larger layout makes bigger groups more likely. Our reading is that the free spins carry most of the top-end potential.
Free Spins
Triggered by 4, 5 or 6 or more scatters, for 15, 20 or 25 spins. Wins are multiplied by the number of symbols exploded in the current tumble. Special reels are in play, and no retrigger is possible.
