Pinatas and Ponies review
Three pony pinatas sit above the reels of this Red Tiger release, and almost everything of interest runs through them. In the main game they can switch on at random and multiply the wins of a spin. In the Sweet Spins bonus they stop resetting, so their prizes stack. The game is a 6x6 grid from 2022, rated Medium, with a hit frequency of 32.89% and a top win of 2,172x the bet.
Candy on a 6x6 board
The theme is a colourful meadow party with flags, balloons and sweets. Mechanically, the rules talk about scatter wins built from symbol matches and do not mention paylines. The studio also lists a Feature buy-in, so the bonus can be bought directly, and a stake range from €0.10 to €50.00.
The pinatas are the real subject. Three of them rest at the top of the grid: a Small Pinata, a Big Pinata and a Super Pinata. They are dormant most of the time in the main game, though any of them may randomly activate and apply a multiplier to all the wins at the end of that spin.
Main-game pinata multipliers
A pinata that activates multiplies every win of the spin once the spin ends. The Small Pinata gives 2x, 3x or 5x. The Big Pinata gives 6x, 7x or 10x. The Super Pinata gives 11x, 12x or 15x. Because the multiplier is applied only to wins, an activation on a spin that pays nothing has nothing to boost.
Sweet Spins and the progress bar
Three or more Sweet Spins scatters anywhere on the reels trigger 10 Sweet Spins. Each extra scatter beyond the first three adds 2 more spins to the counter. During the round, every set of 3 scatters retriggers 5 spins, and each additional scatter adds 2 more.
Here the pinatas change role. In the bonus, symbol matches fill a progress bar above the reels, counting the winning characters that take part in scatter wins. When the bar for a pinata is full, you smash it with the pinata buster to reveal a random multiplier.
Progress bar thresholds
The Small Pinata unlocks after 30 matched symbols, the Big Pinata after 60 and the Super Pinata after 120. The thresholds scale up with the prize size, so the biggest pinata asks for the most winning symbols.
Stacking multipliers
Outside the bonus, a pinata multiplier applies once and is gone. In Sweet Spins the multipliers are not reset between spins. They add up and apply to all winning spins until the round ends, with a cap of 30x. After the bonus the total resets for the main game.
The cost of a session
There is one RTP on record, 95.66%, so the house edge is 4.34% and $1,000 wagered costs $43.40 on average. A hit frequency of 32.89% is about one spin in three. At a $0.20 bet, 100 spins cost $0.87 on average. At $1 they cost $4.34 and at $5 they cost $21.70.
The max win is 2,172x the bet. That is $434.40 at $0.20, $2,172 at $1 and $10,860 at $5. The 30x ceiling on bonus multipliers is worth keeping in mind: stacked multipliers are the route to the larger results, and they build only as the progress bar fills.
Games with similar numbers
Several Medium titles sit close to this one. Wild O'Clock lists 95.69% and 2,097x, 24 Hour Grand Prix 95.73% and 2,166x, and Path of Destiny 95.71% and 2,253x. Rock'n'Lock offers 95.69% with the highest ceiling of the group at 2,340x. Here Kitty Kitty and Regal Beasts both have 95.73%, at 2,135x and 2,078x. The gap between them all is small enough that the choice comes down to mechanics rather than maths.
Pros
- Pinata multipliers of up to 15x can hit in the main game
- Sweet Spins multipliers stack up to 30x instead of resetting
- Retriggers add 5 spins for every 3 scatters
- Free official demo available
Cons
- The Super Pinata needs 120 matched symbols, the most demanding threshold
- A house edge of 4.34% costs $43.40 per $1,000 wagered
Verdict
Pinatas and Ponies is a clear design with one engine: pinata multipliers that are one-off in the base game and cumulative in Sweet Spins. The 95.66% RTP and Medium rating are close to those of several similar games, and the 2,172x cap is reached through stacked multipliers. The house edge is 4.34%, so it is paid entertainment with a known cost. The free demo is a fair way to see how fast the progress bar fills.
