Primate King review

Primate King is a progression game first and a line slot second. In Red Tiger's March 2021 release, Gold Coins collected alongside the Primate Wild fill a bar, and each stage of that bar makes the wild stronger: first taller, then multiplied, then sticky. When the last upgrade is in place, the bar itself becomes an extra reel of high-paying symbols. Volatility is Medium and the ceiling is 3,800x, so the growth is steady rather than explosive.

Reels, lines and the bar beside them

The studio lists the game as 6x4 with 30 lines and stakes from €0.10 to €50. In practice the sixth column starts out as the Primate Wild Progress Bar, which sits to the right of the reels and tracks Gold Coins. Only after all upgrades are unlocked does that space turn into a reel.

The studio's hit frequency is 28.76%, a little over one winning spin in four. The Primate Wild substitutes for all paying symbols throughout, so it helps line wins even before any upgrade.

Collecting Gold Coins

As long as some upgrades are still locked, Gold Coins can appear in the bottom right-hand corner of any symbol on the reels. They only count when a Primate Wild lands on the same spin; in that case they are collected and move the progress bar forward.

That condition is important. Coins without the wild are simply lost, so the speed of progress depends on the two appearing together, not on coins alone.

Three upgrades for the Primate Wild

The bar unlocks the upgrades in a fixed order, and each one builds on the previous state.

Upgrade 1: stacked wild

The Primate Wild becomes a stacked 1x4 symbol, filling a whole reel from top to bottom. A full wild reel can connect to more lines than a single wild position.

Upgrade 2: multiplier

A random multiplier is added to the Primate Wild. The studio does not publish the possible values, so the effect on a given win cannot be predicted from the rules we have.

Upgrade 3: sticky wild

The Primate Wild turns sticky and stays on the reels until it has taken part in at least one win and then a non-winning spin follows. Each consecutive win it takes part in increases its Win multiplier. The stickiness resets after that first losing spin.

Sixth reel

Once all three upgrades are unlocked, the progress bar turns into a sixth reel on which only high-paying symbols can land, extending lines with the better symbols.

The cost of chasing the upgrades

Primate King has one RTP on file, 95.66%, a house edge of 4.34%. That comes to about $43.40 per $1,000 wagered across a long run. A hundred spins cost $0.87 at $0.20, $4.34 at $1 and $21.70 at $5 on average.

The 3,800x maximum equals $760 at $0.20, $3,800 at $1 and $19,000 at $5. With Medium volatility, sessions should be less extreme than in high-volatility games, but the strongest state of the wild needs all three upgrades, and reaching them takes many spins in which the wild and coins coincide.

Megaways version and comparable games

Primate King Megaways is the related title, at 95.7% with High volatility and a 30,000x cap, a much wider range. Medium-volatility games with nearby figures include Lucky Fridays at 95.77% and 3,655x, Savannah Pride at 95.74% and 3,425x, and Aurum Codex at 95.77% with a 4,131x top.

Pros

  • Visible progression: three wild upgrades in a fixed order
  • The sticky wild's multiplier grows with each consecutive win
  • A sixth reel of high-paying symbols after full progress
  • Medium volatility with a 28.76% hit frequency

Cons

  • Gold Coins only count when a Primate Wild lands with them
  • The 95.66% RTP gives a 4.34% house edge
  • Multiplier values for the wild are not published

Verdict

Primate King rewards persistence: Gold Coins collected with the Primate Wild unlock a stacked wild, a multiplier and finally a sticky wild whose multiplier grows with consecutive wins, before the bar becomes a sixth reel. The 95.66% RTP means a 4.34% house edge, and the Medium volatility with a 3,800x cap keeps outcomes moderate. It suits players who like building towards something. Set a budget first, since progress takes time.
