Jingle Balls review

Jingle Balls asks whether Santa belongs on the naughty list, and Nolimit City builds an unusual machine around the joke. The grid is asymmetrical, six reels with 3-3-4-4-5-5 rows, and the last two reels start locked. Several of the studio's trademark mechanics sit on top of it, and the bonus comes in three tiers according to the number of scatters. It is a complex game with a high price of entry for its biggest features.

A grid that opens up

The layout is 3-3-4-4-5-5 rows across six reels, which gives up to 614,656 ways to win. Wins are counted from left to right. In the base game the fifth reel is locked until it is unlocked through the Wish Upon a Star option, described below.

The studio describes three special mechanics. xWays on the first two reels reveals a random regular symbol and duplicates it to add win ways. xNudge Wilds sit in the middle reels and nudge into view, adding to the win multiplier at each step. On the final two reels, xSplit Wilds divide the symbols to their left and right, which doubles the ways multiplier.

Wish Upon a Star

This optional bet raises the stake by 50%. In return it places a scatter on reel 2 and unlocks reel 5, although it does not apply inside the bonus rounds. The studio's own phrase for the idea is the xBet feature. It is worth remembering that a higher stake changes every spin, so the cost over a session rises with it.

Spirit Spins in three tiers

Scatter count decides the bonus. Each round begins with a setup spin that fixes the number of spins and assigns multipliers to the character symbols. During the round, every extra scatter adds one spin, and the round ends when the spins run out or when the 12,250x cap is reached.

Spirit Spins

Three or more scatters start it. One random character is active, or all of them if four or more scatters landed. Top-reel multiplier boosts persist during the round. Collecting three scatters inside the round upgrades it to All Aboard.

All Aboard

Four scatters start this tier, where all characters are active at the same time and their multipliers apply together.

Double Joy

Five scatters start the top tier, where the character win multipliers are doubled in both the setup and the free spins. Top-reel boosts are also larger in this mode.

Buying the bonus

Every tier can be bought directly: Spirit Spins for 60x the bet, All Aboard for 270x and Double Joy for 486x. A separate Lucky Draw option costs 187.2x. These prices are large next to a normal spin, so a single purchase at a $1 bet is a $60 to $486 decision.

Numbers and volatility

The RTP is 96.1%, a house edge of 3.9% and about $39 lost per $1,000 wagered. The hit frequency is 22.67%. For 100 spins, a $0.20 bet costs about $0.78, $1 costs $3.90 and $5 costs $19.50. The maximum win is 12,250x the bet, which is $2,450 at $0.20, $12,250 at $1 and $61,250 at $5.

On volatility our catalogue says High, while the studio's page text calls it Extreme. We keep both, and in either case the message is the same: long stretches without much return are normal for this kind of design.

Similar games

Comparable Nolimit City titles in the catalogue include Whacked! at 96.07% and 11,912x, Ding Dong Death at 96.08% and 14,280x, Deadwood xNudge at 96.03% and 13,950x, and Blood and Shadow 2 at 96.09% with 16,161x. All are rated High.

Pros

  • Three bonus tiers, from Spirit Spins to Double Joy, with growing multipliers
  • Up to 614,656 ways on an expanding grid
  • Max win of 12,250x the bet
  • Bonus buy and Wish Upon a Star options for those who want them

Cons

  • Volatility is High in the catalogue and Extreme in the studio's text
  • Bonus buys cost 60x to 486x the bet
  • Many mechanics at once, which makes the rules harder to learn
  • No official free demo is recorded in our data

Verdict

Jingle Balls is a high-variance Nolimit City design with a 12,250x cap, a 96.1% RTP and a 3.9% house edge. The catalogue rates volatility as High while the studio's text says Extreme. The three Spirit Spins tiers give the bonus real structure, but the buy prices of 60x to 486x make it an expensive game to push. Set a budget before you start, and read the rules carefully first.
