Christmas Carol Megaways review
Christmas Carol Megaways brings the three Christmas ghosts of past, present and future to a Pragmatic Play Megaways grid from 2020. The festive look sits on a familiar engine: reels that change height every spin, tumbles after each win, and a free spins round where every tumble pushes a multiplier one step higher. Its most distinctive choice comes at the start of the bonus, when you pick between more spins and a bigger starting multiplier.
Reels that change height
Each spin sets a new height for every reel. Reels 1 and 6 can hold up to 7 symbols, reels 2 to 5 up to 8. Above reels 2 to 5 runs an extra horizontal row that spins on its own, from right to left. Wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, and when every reel is at full height the count reaches 200,704 ways.
The Wild appears only on that top row of reels 2 to 5. It stands in for every symbol except the Scatter, so its position on the horizontal row lets it complete combinations across the middle of the board.
Tumble Feature
After each payout the winning symbols vanish, the rest fall down and new ones fill the gaps from above at the same size as the spin's original symbols. This repeats until no new win forms, and the whole chain is added to the balance at the end.
Choosing your free spins
Four or more Scatters anywhere open the round, and then the game asks for a choice. With 4 Scatters the options are 15 spins starting at 1x, 10 spins at 5x or 5 spins at 10x. With 5 Scatters they become 19, 14 or 9 spins at the same starting multipliers, and with 6 Scatters the top option is 23 spins at 1x or 18 spins at 5x. A fourth option hands out a random number of spins with a random starting multiplier.
The trade-off is straightforward. More spins give the multiplier more time to climb from a low start; fewer spins start higher but leave less room. Neither is better by the rules alone; they spread the same kind of risk differently.
Free Spins
In the round, every tumble raises the win multiplier by 1x, and each tumble's win is multiplied by the current value. Three Scatters during the round add 5 more spins, with no limit stated on retriggers. If total winnings reach 20,000x the bet, the round stops at once and any remaining spins are forfeited.
The Ante Bet option
Normal play uses a bet multiplier of 20x. Switching to 25x raises the cost of each spin by a quarter, to 1.25 times the standard stake. In return, more Scatter symbols are placed on the reels and the chance of reaching the free spins naturally is doubled.
One detail needs flagging. The studio's description mentions buying the round through a Buy Feature, but the rules in our source list no buy option for this game. Check in the game itself before relying on it.
Ante Bet
Raises the bet multiplier from 20x to 25x. The extra cost buys twice the natural chance of free spins, because more Scatters sit on the reels. It changes how often the bonus comes, not what it pays.
Return and limits
Our catalogue lists one RTP, 96.5%, for a house edge of 3.5%. That is $35 per $1,000 wagered across a long sample. Over 100 spins the average cost is $0.70 at $0.20, $3.50 at $1 and $17.50 at $5; with the Ante Bet on, those averages grow with the larger stake.
The cap of 20,000x equals $4,000 at a $0.20 bet and $100,000 at $5. Pragmatic Play does not publish a volatility label for this game, and no hit frequency is on file. A multiplier that grows only within the bonus means the larger outcomes depend on long tumble chains during free spins.
Other Megaways with similar figures
No direct sequels are listed. Barnyard Megahays Megaways from 2024 shares the 96.5% RTP with a 10,000x cap, while 5 Lions Megaways and Chilli Heat Megaways, both from 2021, match the RTP but stop at 5,000x. Among the titles listed as similar, this game's 20,000x ceiling is the highest.

Verdict
Christmas Carol Megaways pairs a busy Megaways grid with a free spins choice that lets you trade spins for a higher starting multiplier, then adds 1x with every tumble. The 96.5% RTP means a 3.5% house edge, and volatility is not published. The 20,000x cap is high for a 2020 Megaways release.
