Infectious 5 xWays review

Infectious 5 xWays swaps heroes for five villains: Havoc, Mind Flayer, Torch, Misery and Toxicity. Nolimit City deliberately narrows the toolkit here, building the game around a single reel mechanic, xWays, and its stronger form, Infectious xWays, in which a Wild makes a whole reel's matching symbols grow. The bonus offers a choice between a steadier and a wilder mode, with a third tier above both.

A 5x4 start that grows

Spins begin on five reels of four rows, and wins are counted as ways from the leftmost reel. The studio page puts the starting count at 1,024 ways. The board does not keep that size for long when an xWays symbol arrives, because each one makes its reel taller.

The hit frequency is 31.34%, the share of spins that pay anything. That is close to one spin in three, a little friendlier on paper than many games with this volatility label, though many of those hits are small.

xWays and the infection

Everything in this game flows from one mechanic and its upgrade.

xWays

A mystery symbol that reveals one symbol type and splits into 2 or 3 copies of it, stacked within its position. The reel becomes taller, so the number of ways rises for that spin.

Infectious xWays

If an xWays symbol lands while a Wild is on the board, it becomes infectious. Every symbol on that reel matching the revealed type expands to the same size, turning one split into several. This is the source of the game's largest ways counts and its biggest base-game results.

Choosing a bonus

Three or four Bonus symbols open Infectious Spins and ask you to pick a mode. Four Bonus symbols add one extra spin to whichever you choose. Five Bonus symbols skip the choice and go straight to Mayhem Mode, and collecting a total of five Bonus symbols during either chosen mode also moves you up into Mayhem.

Toxic Hazard

9 spins, or 10 when triggered by four Bonus symbols. On every spin 1 to 5 random Wilds are dropped onto the middle reels. With Wilds always present, any xWays that lands is very likely to turn infectious. The rules describe it as the more solid of the two choices.

Lock n' Load

7 spins, or 8 from four Bonus symbols. Every Wild that lands locks in place for the rest of the feature and can carry a x2 or x3 multiplier, and each locked Wild adds one extra spin. Any xWays here always becomes infectious. It is the more volatile option.

Mayhem Mode

The top tier. The rules sheet and the studio's text give its length as 12 or 10 spins without settling on one figure, so we report both. The studio says the premium characters reveal the top symbol during this mode.

The published maths

Our catalogue records a 96.02% RTP, leaving a house edge of 3.98%, roughly $39.80 for every $1,000 wagered across a long run. The rules also mention a 94.27% version, so the return can differ depending on which configuration is offered. They split the 96.02% into 61.6% from the base game and 34.42% from the free spins.

Free spins arrive about once in 220 spins on average, and a win of 100x or more about once in 840. The 55,555x cap is given odds of around one in 28 million, which shows how remote it is. In money, the cap is $11,111 at $0.20 and $277,775 at $5. A 100-spin session costs on average $0.80 at $0.20 and $19.90 at $5.

Volatility is Very high in our catalogue and Extreme on the studio page.

Paying in and comparing

The Nolimit Bonus Buy sells entry to the three Infectious Spins modes at prices between 75x and 555x the bet, without an itemised price list in our source. The studio's introduction refers to four bonus modes, while the rules in the pack describe three, so expect the game itself to clarify that.

No sequels are listed. D - Day shares the 55,555x cap at 96.12%, Land Of The Free lists 96.08% with 57,000x, and Dead Canary has the same 96.02% RTP with a 65,000x cap.

Pros

  • One clear mechanic, xWays, with a stronger infectious form
  • A choice between steady Toxic Hazard and volatile Lock n' Load
  • Hit frequency of 31.34% and published odds for bonuses and big wins
  • A 55,555x ceiling

Cons

  • A 94.27% RTP version also exists
  • Mayhem Mode length is given as 12 or 10 spins without clarification
  • Very high volatility, Extreme on the studio page

Verdict

Infectious 5 xWays shows how far one mechanic can be pushed: xWays stretch reels, Wilds make them infectious, and the bonus lets you choose between steady random Wilds and riskier locking ones. The RTP is 96.02%, a 3.98% house edge, with a 94.27% variant also documented, and volatility is Very high, or Extreme per the studio. The published odds make the risk clear; plan your budget around them.
