Dragons Playground review

Two Dragon Bros and a baby dragon guard a treasure in NetEnt's 2024 slot. The game runs on avalanches, so winning symbols vanish and new ones drop in. What sets it apart is a spin counter: flames mark symbols, frames build up beneath them, and on every 10th spin all the frames turn into Wilds. A 6 by 4 grid with 4,096 ways, a Very high volatility label and a 10,611x ceiling complete the picture.

Avalanches and the 10-spin cycle

Symbols that form a win disappear and new ones fall in, which can produce further wins in the same spin. On top of that sits the flame-and-frame cycle. Symbols can arrive with a flame in the bottom right corner. If a flamed symbol is part of a win, the flame is removed and a frame appears beneath it. When a frame already sits on that position, the flame creates a frame on a different one.

At the start of the 10th spin all frames turn into Wilds. That spin has its own restrictions: flames do not appear on it or its avalanches, Dragon's Breath cannot be activated, no scatters appear, and frames cannot be added or upgraded. The counter then starts again.

Wilds

Wilds substitute for every paying symbol and count as whichever symbol makes the highest-paying combination in a win way. They do not spin, and they can only appear during these cycle rounds or through Dragon's Breath. A win way made up only of Wilds is paid at the advertised value for six Wilds in a row.

Dragon's Breath

At random, a dragon breathes fire and adds between 2 and 10 Wilds to the reels. It cannot trigger on the 10th spin or its avalanches.

Free spins

Three or more scatters anywhere award 10 free spins. Each scatter above three adds four spins, and since a screen can show at most six scatters, the opening award reaches 22 spins. Inside the round, three or more scatters add 5 more spins, with 2 more for each scatter above three. At six scatters that is up to 11 extra spins. The studio text we hold is cut off after this point.

Numbers and costs

The single recorded RTP is 96.18%, so the house edge is 3.82% and the long-run cost is about $38.20 per $1,000 wagered. Hit frequency is 23.16%. Volatility is Very high, and the max win is 10,611x the bet.

In money terms, 100 spins cost $0.76 on average at $0.20, $3.82 at $1 and $19.10 at $5 ($500 wagered). The top prize equals $2,122.20 at a $0.20 bet, $10,611 at $1 and $53,055 at $5. A Feature Buy option exists, and the studio lists bets from €0.10 to €40.00.

  • 6x4 grid with 4,096 ways
  • Up to 22 free spins from six scatters

Cons

  • Very high volatility

  • House edge of 3.82% still applies in every round

Verdict

Dragons Playground makes the 10-spin cycle the centre of the design: flames build frames, and frames become Wilds. Add avalanches, Dragon's Breath and free spins that reach 22, and the game gives you plenty to read. It has a 96.18% RTP, Very high volatility and a 10,611x max win. The house edge of 3.82% means a cost on average, so use the demo and set a limit first.
