Finn and the Swirly Spin review
Finn and the Swirly Spin, released by NetEnt in 2017, is a gentle game on paper. It is rated Low volatility, hits a win on about 22% of spins and tops out at 300x the bet. Its charm is structural: 25 symbols sit on a spiral 5x5 grid, wins explode, and symbols slide along an arrow to refill the board. Four random features can step in after the spin.
The swirl and the avalanche
Each of the 25 spaces on the 5x5 board holds its own independent symbol. When a win forms, the winning symbols are destroyed and the remaining ones move to fill the gaps. They travel from higher-numbered spaces to the next lowest space, following the direction of an arrow around the spiral. That is what the studio calls an avalanche, and it gives a spin the chance to pay more than once.
The rules separate wins into two types. A win that contains a Wild makes that Wild explode and destroy the symbols next to it, vertically and horizontally. A win that has no Wild creates one.
Four random features
After the first spin, a random feature may be awarded. The game decides this once all symbols have come to rest, and applies the feature immediately before any wins are paid. Four kinds are possible.
Starfall Wilds
This feature places two to five or more Wilds on the reels at random. They may form a pattern or a line. Since a Wild in a win explodes the symbols beside it, extra Wilds add to the chances of a chain.
Dragon Destroy
Dragon Destroy can only be activated when there are no wins before it appears. It destroys a random number of symbols, which starts another avalanche. It works as a rescue for a spin that would otherwise pay nothing.
Irish Luck
Also limited to spins with no win on the reels. A horizontal or vertical line of one symbol type is added, chosen at random, and that line produces a win. Like Dragon Destroy, it is a way to turn a dead spin into a paying one.
Magic Transform
All spade and heart symbols are changed into another, higher-paying symbol. The symbol they become is chosen by the game. It is the only one of the four that improves the value of symbols without adding Wilds or removing others.
Free spins and the key
The studio's overview also lists a Free Spins Key and four free spins types. The rules text we hold does not explain how the key is earned or what each type awards, so those details are not stated here. The in-game help screen is the place to read them.
Numbers for a Low volatility game
The RTP is 96.62%, a house edge of 3.38%, which is about $33.80 lost per $1,000 wagered. Over 100 spins, the average cost is $0.68 at $0.20 a spin, $3.38 at $1 and $16.90 at $5, which is $500 wagered.
A hit frequency of 22% means roughly one spin in five pays something. The max win of 300x equals $60 at a $0.20 bet, $300 at $1 and $1,500 at $5. Low volatility and a modest ceiling go together: the results are expected to be steadier and smaller.
Other Low volatility games
Finn and the Candy Spin lists the same 96.62%, Low volatility and 300x. Butterfly Staxx (96.8%, 300x), Jimi Hendrix (96.9%, 400x), Imperial Riches (96.88%, 200x), Hook's Heroes (96.82%, 500x) and Coins of Egypt (96.97%, 200x) are all Low too, each with a higher RTP and a different ceiling.
Pros
- Low volatility, a 22% hit frequency and avalanches suit smaller budgets
- Four random features can add Wilds, destroy symbols, add a winning line or upgrade symbols
- RTP of 96.62% means a 3.38% house edge
- Max win and hit frequency are both published
Cons
- Max win is only 300x the bet
- No free demo is listed in our catalogue
- The free spins details are not described in the rules text
Verdict
Finn and the Swirly Spin is a steady, modest game: Low volatility, a 22% hit frequency, avalanches on a spiral 5x5 grid and a 300x ceiling. Four random features break up the pace. Its 96.62% RTP means a 3.38% house edge, and the low ceiling is part of the deal. It suits players who value small, frequent returns over a chance at a very large one.
