Dragon Boyz review
Red Tiger sets this slot in an arena packed for a band it calls D-pop. The mechanics are a level system built on dragon wilds. You climb four levels by collecting them: 48 red ones, then 24 blue ones, then 12 green ones. Each level opens a new position above the reels where a dragon can expand and trigger its own feature. The hit frequency is listed at 52.15%, yet the volatility is still rated Very high.
The level system
Level 1 starts on a 5x3 grid, with dragons acting as ordinary wilds. An extra row sits above the middle three reels, but every position in it is locked. After 48 Red Dragons have landed, Level 2 opens.
The targets shrink as you go. Level 2 needs 24 Blue Dragons to reach Level 3, and Level 3 needs 12 Green Dragons to reach the top. So the climb gets shorter each time, and the first level is the longest stretch of the game.
What each level opens
Each level unlocks one position in the top row above the middle three reels. If the matching dragon lands there, it expands to all four positions of its reel and triggers its feature. The rules we hold describe the Red Dragon feature as awarding a random multiplier, but the text is cut off at the values, so we do not quote them.
Level 2: Red Dragon
The leftmost top-row position opens. A Red Dragon landing there expands over the full four positions and starts the Red Dragon feature. Lower on the reel, it is a standard wild that substitutes for all paying symbols.
Level 3: Blue Dragon
The middle top-row position opens. A Blue Dragon landing there expands to all four positions and triggers the Blue Dragon feature.
Level 4: Green and Golden Dragons
The rightmost top-row position opens for the Green Dragon and its feature. A Golden Dragon is added, and if it lands on the top position of the middle reel it expands into a 3x4 Mega Wild over the three middle reels.
Free Spins
Unlocked on Level 4. The free spins symbols can land on the first and last reel. The text we hold does not give the trigger count.
Hit frequency and what it means
The catalogue lists a hit frequency of 52.15%, so a little over half of the spins return something. That figure says nothing about size. Wins can be small, and the Very high volatility label tells you the game's value sits in rarer, larger results. The 3-4-4-4-3 layout offers up to 576 ways, and a feature buy-in is available.
Return and ceiling
The RTP is 96.11%, a house edge of 3.89%, or about $38.90 per $1,000 wagered. A hundred spins cost about $0.78 at a $0.20 bet, $3.89 at $1 and $19.45 at $5.
The max win is 20,000 times the bet, which is $4,000 at $0.20, $20,000 at $1 and $100,000 at $5. Bets on the studio's page run from EUR 0.10 to EUR 20.00.
Neighbours at 20,000x
Santa's Rage and Thor's Rage 2 list the same 96.11%, Loki's Descendants 96.1%, Hit The Jungle 96.08%, Aztec Tribute 96.14% and Dynamite Riches The Mother Lode 96.17%. Every one shares the 20,000x cap and the Very high label, so Dragon Boyz is separated by its levels and its unusually high hit frequency.
Pros
- Four levels with different dragon wilds and features
- 52.15% hit frequency and a 20,000x max win
- Golden Dragon Mega Wild covering a 3x4 area
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Very high volatility
- The first level needs 48 Red Dragons before anything opens
- Feature values and the free spins trigger are cut off in the text we hold
Verdict
Dragon Boyz replaces a single bonus with a ladder of dragon features, each unlocked by collecting more wilds. The 96.11% RTP is paired with Very high volatility and a 20,000x ceiling, while the 52.15% hit frequency means frequent but not necessarily large results. The 3.89% house edge is the average cost, and the free demo is the best way to watch the levels.
