Fairytale Legends: Red Riding Hood review

NetEnt's October 2016 take on the Red Riding Hood story sends you towards Grandma's house, with the big bad wolf as the figure to watch out for. The mechanics are grounded in wilds. Two or more of them in the main game freeze in place and trigger re-spins, while three random fairy features can switch on at any time. It is a 5x3 slot with 20 paylines, Medium volatility, a 96.33% RTP and an 800x top prize.

Sticky Wild Re-Spins

Wilds land on reels 2, 3 and 4 in the main game and on all reels in the free spins. When two or more appear in the main game, they act as Sticky Wilds and award a Sticky Wild Re-Spin. Every Sticky Wild from the spin that triggered it stays in the same position during the re-spin.

The chain can continue. An additional re-spin is awarded if one or more visible Sticky Wilds appear during a re-spin, and wilds that land behind existing Sticky Wilds do not count as visible. The re-spins end when no new visible Sticky Wilds appear. Wins from the re-spins are added to any wins from the initial spin.

Ordering and restrictions

No random features or bonus features can be activated during a Sticky Wild Re-Spin. If three Bonus symbols and two or more wilds arrive on the same main game spin, the Bonus Feature is played first, and the re-spin comes afterwards. The studio text we have does not describe what the Bonus Features contain, so this review cannot cover them.

Three random fairy features

The studio lists the Random Features as Fairy Magic Spin, Fairy Surprise and Fairy Wild Spin. They activate at random in the main game only. They cannot happen during Sticky Wild Re-Spins or free spins, nor at the same time as a Bonus Feature.

Fairy Surprise

It is activated at random after a spin that does not win. A symbol is picked from those on the reels, and the other symbols, starting with the low-win ones, turn into the selected symbol until a win is awarded.

Overlay cluster

One of the random features places a cluster of 5 to 9 medium-win symbols, never the game logo symbol, as an overlay on the reels for one spin. The studio text we have does not tie this rule to one of the three names.

The numbers

The game has one RTP on record, 96.33%, a house edge of 3.67%. That is about $36.70 lost per $1,000 wagered over a long run. A 100-spin session costs about $0.73 at a $0.20 bet, $3.67 at $1 and $18.35 at $5. Bets run from €0.20 to €200.00.

The hit frequency is 20%, one spin in five. The maximum win is 800x the bet, which is $160 at $0.20, $800 at $1 and $4,000 at $5. It is a low ceiling, which fits a Medium rating and a plain structure.

Games with similar numbers

Three games share the 800x ceiling: The Legend of Shangri - La: Cluster Pays at 96.59%, Wings of Riches at 96.63% and Elements: The Awakening at 96.02%. Fruit Shop from 2011 lists 96.71% and 800x. Lucky Angler: A Snowy Catch lists 96.41% and 900x, and Asgardian Stones from 2018 lists 96.31% and 1,000x.

Pros

  • Sticky Wild Re-Spins can chain when new visible sticky wilds appear
  • Three random features can alter the base game without a trigger symbol
  • 96.33% RTP, a house edge of 3.67%
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Max win of 800x is a low ceiling
  • The studio text we have does not describe the Bonus Features or all random features
  • Random features and bonuses are blocked during the re-spins

Verdict

Fairytale Legends: Red Riding Hood is a modest game built on sticky wilds and a trio of random fairy features. The 96.33% RTP and Medium volatility give a 3.67% house edge and a moderate pace, but the 800x ceiling keeps the range of outcomes narrow. It is paid entertainment, so set a budget, and try the free demo to see how often the sticky wilds chain.
