Catfish Hunters review

Catfish Hunters is a comic fishing trip on the Mississippi, played on five reels and three rows. The unusual part is how it pays. Beyond normal ways, fish symbols carry cash values and only pay when they sit inside an Electrical Frame, and every such catch doubles a global multiplier that can climb to 1024x. The free spins then slowly halve that multiplier, which gives them a shape of their own.

Frames, fish and a doubling multiplier

At the start of each spin one or more positions are lit as Electrical Frames. A fish that lands in a frame pays its cash value, from 0.25x to 100x, multiplied by the global Fish multiplier and the bet. That multiplier begins at 1x and doubles with every fish win, up to 1024x. The game evaluates the catches from the top down and from left to right, so the order of the frames affects how far the multiplier has grown by each payout.

Ordinary ways wins pay as normal across the five reels. The fish and frame system sits on top of them.

The Imposter Wild

The Imposter Wild changes into one of five characters, chosen at random. Each does something different to the board.

Stacy

Multiplies the global Fish multiplier by 2, 4 or 8, which shortens the climb to 1024x.

Karen and Granny

Both create more Electrical Frames. Karen frames her own position and the ones next to her; Granny frames the entire grid, so more fish can be caught.

Cletus and Bubba

Both turn regular symbols into Fish. Cletus converts the winning regular symbols; Bubba converts every regular symbol on the board.

Three tiers of free spins

Three Bonus symbols start the Dark Water Spins with eight spins and one upgrade. Four start the Deep Water Spins with ten spins and two upgrades, and five start the Overcharged Spins with twelve spins and all three upgrades. Extra Bonus symbols add spins; in Dark Water each adds one.

The bonus differs from the base game in one important way. The Fish multiplier carried over from the base game is halved on every free spin, down to a minimum of 1x. It decays instead of growing, so the early spins hold most of the value. The xWays symbol also appears and reveals stacks, which in an upgraded round can force Fish or an Imposter.

Pre-spin options

Several options are priced as multiples of the bet. Bonus Booster costs 3 times and places a Bonus on reel two. Grand Catch costs 90 times, brings at least one Imposter and limits fish to 10x, 20x and 100x. Legend Catch costs 2,000 times, brings at least two Imposters and limits fish to 100x.

Three starting-multiplier options start the global Fish multiplier higher: Fishy Spins at 5 times (8x), Fishier Spins at 60 times (128x) and Fishiest Spins at 400 times (1024x). No free demo is listed on the official page.

The maths and the volatility labels

RTP is 96.03%, giving a house edge of 3.97% and $39.70 lost per $1,000 wagered. Our catalogue rates volatility High, while the studio's page says Extreme. Hit frequency is 30.41%, so about one spin in three pays something.

A hundred spins cost $0.79 at a $0.20 bet, $3.97 at $1 and $19.85 at $5. The maximum win is 20,000 times the bet, or $4,000, $20,000 and $100,000 at those three stakes.

Neighbours at High volatility

Highway to Hell has the same 96.03% and a 20,066x cap, and Seamen offers 96.04% with 20,000x. True Grit Redemption lists 96.11% and 20,220x, The Crypt 96.05% and 27,000x, Blood and Shadow 2 96.09% and 16,161x, and Loner 96.06% and 14,999x.

Pros

  • Global Fish multiplier doubles with each catch, up to 1024x
  • Three free spin tiers with eight, ten and twelve spins
  • Hit frequency of 30.41% is about one spin in three
  • Starting-multiplier options from 8x to 1024x for those who want them

Cons

  • The Fish multiplier is halved on every free spin, so it decays in the bonus
  • Volatility is High in the catalogue and Extreme on the studio page
  • No free demo is listed on the official page

Verdict

Catfish Hunters turns a simple theme into a layered multiplier game: frames, fish, five Imposter variants and a bonus where the multiplier decays. With a 96.03% RTP, a 3.97% house edge and a 20,000x cap, the headline numbers are plainly stated. The differences between the catalogue and the studio on volatility are a reason to keep stakes low until the rhythm is clear.
