The Sword and the Grail Excalibur review
The Sword and the Grail Excalibur is a 2024 Play'n GO slot and, according to the studio, a sequel to The Sword and the Grail from 2019. The king's blade is the mechanic. A sword can emerge from the stone on any base-game spin and multiply every wild on the screen by as much as 100x, and the free spins turn the wilds into sticky pieces that drift across the reels. The catalogue rates volatility as Very high, and lists five RTP versions.
The sword in the stone
In the base game the sword can emerge on any spin. When it does, it activates a multiplier of 2x, 3x, 10x or 100x, and that multiplier applies to all wilds present on that spin. A spin with no wilds on the board therefore gets little from it.
Prize symbols work without help. Any prize symbol on the reels pays an instant prize, and no collector is needed. If a sword multiplier is active, it is applied first and the prize is paid afterwards, so the two features stack.
Free spins and wandering wilds
The free spins start with a wheel of two segments. It decides the prize: up to 15 free spins, plus four starting scatters. Collecting five scatters raises the sword multiplier by 2x, 3x, 10x or 100x and adds three more free spins.
Sticky wilds
In the feature, any wild that lands stays in place. A wild that is on the reels counts on every following spin until it leaves the board.
Wandering direction
After each round all wilds move together in one direction: up, down, left or right. They stay in play until they eventually fall off the edge of the reels, so a wild has a limited lifetime and its position decides how long it lasts.
What follows from the rules
Sticky wilds that move, together with a multiplier that can climb to 100x, are the source of the large outcomes. The longer a multiplied wild stays on the board, the more it contributes. This is our reading of the rules. The studio does not give a hit frequency, and the catalogue shows no max win, so the size of the best case is unknown.
Very high volatility means the results are concentrated. Expect long stretches in which little happens, and rounds that carry most of the value.
Five RTP versions and their cost
The headline RTP is 96.2%, a house edge of 3.8%, or about $38 lost per $1,000 wagered. Four lower versions are on record: 94.2% (edge 5.8%), 91.2% (8.8%), 87.2% (12.8%) and 84.2% (15.8%). The lowest costs about $158 per $1,000, roughly four times the highest.
In 100-spin sessions the headline version averages $0.76 at a $0.20 bet, $3.80 at $1 and $19 at $5, for $500 wagered. The 84.2% version raises those to $3.16, $15.80 and $79. It is worth confirming which version is live in the game's information screen.
The original and similar games
The earlier The Sword and The Grail, from 2019, is listed at 96.53% with Very high volatility, so this sequel's headline RTP is a little lower. Banquet of Dead, Gemix 100, Mafia Gold and other 2024 titles share the 96.2% and Very high rating.
Pros
- Sword multipliers of 2x, 3x, 10x or 100x on all wilds
- Instant prizes need no collector symbols and can be multiplied
- Moving sticky wilds in the free spins
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Very high volatility
- Four lower RTP versions exist, the lowest at 84.2%
- No max win in our catalogue
Verdict
The Sword and the Grail Excalibur is built on multiplied wilds: the sword can lift them to 100x, and in the free spins they stick and move across the reels. The 96.2% RTP carries a 3.8% house edge, the volatility is Very high, and four lower RTP versions mean the cost can rise sharply. Treat it as paid entertainment, check which version is running, and use the free demo first.
