Banquet of Dead review
Banquet of Dead sets the Dead series inside the tomb of Queen Nitocris, and Play'n GO builds the game on three rules that interact. A special symbol can expand, every expansion strips the lowest-valued symbol from the reels, and an optional gamble round lets you risk a win on a card. It is a 2024 release with 10 paylines and a Very high volatility rating.
Expanding symbols
The expansion feature is triggered when two high-paying or three low-paying symbols are present on the reels. After normal winning combinations have been paid, the Special Symbol can expand to cover all three positions on its reel. Expanded symbols can appear anywhere on the reels with gaps between them, which lets them build wins that a normal payline would not allow.
The studio describes the special symbol as a regular paying symbol that is picked at random to act as the expander during free spins.
Symbol removal
This is the feature that gives the game its rhythm. Each time the expansion fires, the lowest-valued symbol is removed from the reels before the next spin, and the removal continues until the smaller symbols are gone. If the symbol removed happens to be the current special symbol, a new one is chosen at random from those that remain. The background changes to reflect how far the removal has progressed.
As the cheapest symbols disappear, the reels hold fewer, richer symbols. That is a design choice that makes later spins different from early ones in the same session.
Free spins and the gamble
The free spins start with seven spins given automatically. Three or more scatters retrigger the round and add three more spins, and the studio says this can continue for up to 25 rounds.
Free spins retrigger
Seven spins are awarded to start. Three or more scatter symbols during the round add three spins each time, for as many as 25 rounds according to the studio.
Gamble round
An optional gamble lets you try to multiply the total prize on any spin by guessing the colour of a card. The studio adds that guessing the suit can quadruple the current win, that up to five correct guesses in a row are possible, and that the gamble tops out at 2,500 coins.
RTP, cost and volatility
The headline RTP is 96.2%, with four weaker versions at 94.2%, 91.2%, 87.2% and 84.2%. Their house edges run from 3.8% up to 15.8%. A $1,000 total stake costs about $38 on the top version and $158 on the lowest. Volatility is Very high, and no max win is published.
Taking 100 spins at $0.20, the average cost is $0.76 on the headline version and $3.16 on the lowest. At $1 the cost is $3.80 against $15.80, and at $5 it is $19 against $79. The optional gamble is a further way to lose a win you already hold.
Other Very high games from 2024
Gemix 100, Love is in the Fair, Mafia Gold, Merlin Realm of Charm, Moon Princess Power of Love and Pandastic Adventure all list the same 96.2% RTP, 2024 release year and Very high rating.
Pros
- Symbol removal makes the reels change over time as low-valued symbols disappear
- Expanded symbols can pay even with gaps between them
- Free spins can retrigger for up to 25 rounds, according to the studio
- Free official demo available
Cons
- The optional gamble puts an existing win at risk
- Very high volatility, with no max win published
- Five RTP versions, the weakest at 84.2%
Verdict
Banquet of Dead is built around one loop: an expanding symbol pays, the cheapest symbol leaves, and the reels get leaner. Ten paylines keep the base game readable. At 96.2% RTP and Very high volatility, it costs about $38 per $1,000 wagered on the best version, more on the others. The gamble is optional and best left alone if you want a predictable session.
