Troll Hunters review
A snow troll threatens a village, and three warriors stand in its way. Play'n GO wraps that winter story around a grid game from 2013 in which winning symbols are cleared, the remaining ones fall, and a multiplier grows with every fall. A golden rune acts as the wild and is created by the grid itself. The studio's published material is short, so the review concentrates on the mechanics it confirms and on the five RTP settings.
Clear, fall, multiply
Play'n GO describes the core loop in a few lines. Once a winning combination is paid, its symbols vanish and those above slide down into the empty spaces. If that produces a new combination, the process repeats, and every new drop raises the win multiplier by a step. Long chains are therefore worth more per step than short ones.
The page does not give the grid size, how many symbols form a win or the paytable values. No official rules document is in our pack, so those details have to come from the help screen inside the game.
Golden rune wild
The rune substitutes for any other symbol. Rather than landing at random, it is created during play: whenever a winning combination of three symbols is removed, a rune appears in the position of the middle symbol. That gives the next drop a ready-made substitute and can extend the chain.
Pricing by configuration
Operators can run Troll Hunters at one of five settings. The best is 96.69% with a 3.31% edge; next come 94.74% (edge 5.26%) and 91.75% (edge 8.25%); the two lowest are 87.69% (edge 12.31%) and 84.69% (edge 15.31%). Expressed per $1,000 in bets, the long-run loss climbs from $33.10 to $52.60, $82.50, $123.10 and finally $153.10.
For a 100-spin session at $1, the gap between top and bottom is $3.31 against $15.31 on average; at $0.20 a spin it is $0.66 against $3.06, and at $5 it is $16.55 against $76.55. The spinning, the drops and the troll are identical in each case. Only the price differs, and the game's info screen shows which setting is live.
Volatility is Medium; a max win is not published.
Sequel and same-era titles
Troll Hunters 2 arrived in 2020 with a 96.5% RTP and a Very high rating, a far bumpier profile than the original's Medium. Other Medium-rated Play'n GO games with close numbers include Energoonz from 2013, which also lists 96.69%, Leprechaun goes Egypt from the same year at 96.75%, and Ninja Fruits at 96.65%.
Is it worth a look?
The appeal is a simple chain mechanic with a growing multiplier and a moderate risk profile. The drawback is how little is documented: no bonus round, max win or grid size appears in the material we hold. A free demo is available, which is the easiest way to see the drops in action before deciding.
Pros
- Multiplier increases with each drop in a chain
- Wild runes are created by three-symbol wins
- Medium volatility and a free official demo
Cons
- Lower settings go down to 84.69%, a 15.31% edge
- No max win, grid size or bonus details published
- The sequel's numbers do not tell us how the two games differ in play
Verdict
Troll Hunters is a 2013 grid slot built on one idea: cleared wins make symbols fall, each fall lifts the multiplier, and three-symbol wins leave a golden rune wild behind. Medium volatility and a best RTP of 96.69% make it reasonably priced, but four lower settings exist, the worst at 84.69%. Check the version, use the free demo to learn the drops, and play only with money set aside for entertainment.
